Title: Biophysical modeling of 3D silk-derived scaffolds to support directed differentiation of tissue stem cells in co-culture: in vitro generation of vascularized adipose tissue.
Description of Opportunity:
In this exciting and cross-disciplinary project, we aim to combine recent advances in stem cell biology and biomedical engineering, to generate an in-vitro model of vascularized adipose tissue. This research addresses the need for improved translational in-vitro cellular models for drug screening and studies of adipose tissue metabolism and inflammation and has implications also for the concept of vascularization in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. We seek to drive differentiation of human adipose tissue-derived stem cells (preadipocytes) towards the three major cell types in adipose tissue, by optimization of environmental queues within 3D silk-derived scaffolds.
Your activities will be centered on assessing differentiation efficiency of tissue stem cells and functionality of cells within various 3D silk-derived scaffolds. Characterization with respect to biomarker expression or tracking of morphological changes will be based on various high content imaging technologies as well as array-based expression analysis. Identification and modeling of physical properties such as porosity and stiffness of 3D silk scaffold in close collaboration with Professor Kaplan's lab.
Your scientific research will also give you the opportunity to work with (and influence) fellow scientists across many other disciplines. You will be expected to deliver the results of your novel research in-house via global working groups and externally via meetings and through publications.
Minimum experience:
A PhD in one or more of the following areas:
Cell biology
Tissue engineering
Preferred experience/requirements:
The applicant has previously worked with stem cell or primary cells or in the field of adipose- or vascular biology.
A background in material bioengineering, 3D cell culture or disease modeling is an advantage.
Optionally, applicants have experience in high content cellular imaging or functional characterization of in vitro cultured cells or tissue.
