1 PhD student in the research education subject: Soil Science
Soil organic matter decomposition in a changing climate
The balance between carbon sequestration and soil organic matter decomposition and its possible feedback to CO2 concentration into the atmosphere has recently received considerable interest. A four-year PhD student position is available at the Department of Chemistry (SLU, Uppsala) to advance understanding of soil biota roles in soil organic matter decomposition and energy transformations involved in such processes. The main aim is to provide experimental data to improve mechanistic process-based soil organic matter models. Recent advances in micro-calorimetry allow now the measurements of thermal flow and energy transformation with very high precision at various temperatures and provide an important piece in the jigsaw in this proposed research. Laboratory experiments will be carried out under various potential future climate scenarios. The PhD student will work in an international supervisory team (main supervisor Assoc. Prof. Anke Herrmann, Department of Chemistry, SLU, Uppsala, Sweden) and postdoctoral research fellows and PhD students.
Qualifications
A BSc or preferably a MSc in either environmental science/chemistry or soil science. Courses in microbiology, chemistry and stable isotope methods are good merits. The applicant should have proven skills in both oral and written scientific English.

Those who met the requirements for general eligibility before July 1st, 2007, i.e. had completed a programme of higher education for at least 180 Higher education credits or the equivalent, will continue to do so until the end of 2015."
Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
