We're investigating oxygen transport in Chemical-Looping Combustion (CLC)-a revolutionary technology with vast potential for sustainable energy. Your work will blend hands-on experiments in fluidized bed reactors with advanced analytical techniques like SEM, XRD, and TOF-SIMS to uncover the mechanisms behind fuel and metal oxide conversions.
About Oxygen Carrier Research and the project
When burning fuel, oxygen is usually supplied through air, which is mostly nitrogen-resulting in nitrogen-heavy off-gases. By using solid oxygen carriers (metal oxides), oxygen is delivered in solid form, eliminating nitrogen from off-gases. This enables efficient CO2 storage, pure H2 production, and oxygen-rich processes. These carriers can repeatedly absorb and release oxygen, offering advantages like high density and easy gas-solid separation. Chalmers is a global leader in this innovative research.
This project delves into the fundamental mechanisms governing fuel and metal oxide conversions in oxygen carrier applications. The primary focus is on Chemical-Looping Combustion (CLC), with potential applications in conventional combustion, reforming, and gasification. The research involves:
• Laboratory experiments in small fluidized bed reactors.
• Extensive material characterization using SEM, XRD, TOF-SIMS, and other advanced tools.
About the department and division
The department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering represent a broad field of fundamental and applied research and education. We are committed to teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate level. The field of research for the division Energy and Materials is very broad. We have diverse research activity, focusing on different aspects of material and energy related questions. We contribute to a sustainable society by developing improvements for materials and energy systems applicable in many areas.
Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.
