- Development of 3D-printable, self-lubricated polymer composites with improved wear resistance for total joint replacement

PhD degree at: Luleå University of Technology, Sweden

Are you interested in the field of biotribology, Biomaterials and polymer science? Would you like to contribute to the development of cutting-edge technologies to impact on improvement of 3D printing techniques to provide adequate surfaces/materials for functional use in medical devices and joint replacement? Do you want to further your career and attain a PhD in one of the Sweden's leading research-intensive universities?

You will join a recently funded European Training Network (ETN) BioTrib (project ID 956004, call H2020-MSCA-ITN-2020). BioTrib offers high-level doctoral training, where two Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) will be employed at the Luleå University of Technology (LTU) in Sweden with secondment and short visit from three international collaborators.

Short description of project

ESR 4: Development of 3D-printable, self-lubricated and multifunctional UHMWPE/PEEK composites with improved wear resistance for total joint replacement

Objectives: The objectives of this study are to investigate and evaluate the possibilities of using modern manufacturing method, e.g., rapid prototyping, in manufacturing of implant components, using high-performance thermoplastics and their composites with superior self-lubricity and wear resistance. The osteolysis induced by wear particles in total joint replacement (TJR) is the major failure reason for implant. In order to address this issue, the first objective will be focused understanding of materials parameters for the development of novel self-lubricating and polymer and polymer composites with improved mechanical characteristics, using rapid prototyping methodology. To investigate the integrity of bulk and surface integrity of the 3D printed component. The second objective is the enhancement of the mechanical and tribological properties of the polymeric based materials, using the 3D printing method, ensuring adequate consolidation and surface finishing. The third objective is to develop a fundamental understanding of the wear mechanisms for the new self-lubricating composites using tribometers, SEM and advanced surface profilometry to elucidate surface interactions for the materials prepared using rapid prototyping methods versus commercially available materials.

Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics: has knowledge, expertise and state of the art laboratory facilities to offer a broad interdisciplinary doctoral training education. Tribology is the main research focus at the Division of Machine Elements. The group is one of the largest tribology research groups in Europe with about 35 staff members (including 8 professors and 2 associate professors).

Qualifications
You will have a top-class undergraduate degree and/or a Master degree, or equivalent, in, Polymer Science, Polymer Engineering or a relevant Physical Science in polymers, or Mechanical Engineering, with research experience or an interest in Tribology, Materials and/or polymer manufacturing technologies, and the flexibility to travel and work internationally.

Experience/knowledge in 3D printing of polymeric materials, nanotechnology and 2D materials and knowledge in manufacturing of thermoplastic composites for loadbearing applications, different material characterisation methods and polymer tribology is meriting.

Important eligibility rules for this position
There are no restrictions on the nationality, but

• Applicants must, at the time of recruitment, have not yet been awarded a doctorate degree and be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers. This is measured from the date that you obtained the degree which would entitle you to embark on a PhD.
• At the time of recruitment, applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc...) in SWEDEN for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment under the BioTrib project. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.

Luleå - the city
Luleå is situated in the north of Sweden, near the sea (Gulf of Bothnia) and have warm and sunny summers with midnight sun and cold winters with lots of snow. Skiing, skating, ice-hockey and driving snow mobile are typical activities in the winter. See Luleå the City for more information.
