Profession; PhD position in medical science-Neurophysiology and symptoms in patients with IBS
Reference number: UR 2016/243. Project title: Neurophysiology and symptom pattern in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Job assignments: The aim of this project is to clarify how different neurophysiological abnormalities along the brain-gut axis interact in patients with the most common functional GI disorder, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and demonstrate how these interactions translate into symptom generation in this large group of patients. Our hypothesis is that integrating measures of function at different levels of the brain-gut axis in IBS patients will lead to a greater understanding of the complex symptom pattern in IBS patients, and that effective treatment options for IBS influence multiple sites along the brain-gut axis. The PhD student will investigate the interaction between different neurophysiological abnormalities in IBS patients and their relevance for symptom generation in an existing cohort of patients, as well as in a prospective cohort of patients, where the aim is to validate the findings from the existing cohort. Moreover, to validate the importance o f the neurophysiological alterations, the effect of gut-directed hypnotherapy, a clinically effective treatment option in IBS, on these measures will be investigated. Within this project, the PhD student will gain expertise in performing and evaluating different neurophysiologic examinations, advanced statistical modelling and clinical characterization of patients with GI symptoms.
