Chalmers University of Technology is looking for someone to fill a 12-month maternity leave vacancy for an International Communications Officer. This position sits within the Press Team at the Communications Division at Chalmers. The successful applicant will be responsible for proactive and reactive communication with both international and Swedish media, that serves to increase the awareness of the cutting-edge research being carried out at Chalmers, in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The Press Team's mission is to:

• Create content and develop press communication for a range of channels, that establishes a broad international and national impact for Chalmers' research findings in leading daily and specialist press
• Establish, maintain and further develop good international media relations through proactive and reactive media contacts.
• Manage media inquiries and oversee the press phoneline and mailbox, providing journalists with relevant information, contacts and spokespersons.
• Ensure effective media coverage and assist the wider Communications Division with follow-up support and media analysis of communication efforts.
• Initiate, plan and implement crisis communication plans alongside other key members of the Communications Division.
• Advise and support key stakeholders and spokespersons from with the university in issues related to media training and outreach.

Description of the role
In this role you are primarily responsible for planning, implementing and following up on research communication with the media as a target group, the focus of which is on international media. This will mainly involve the production of press releases and other informative material for the media, based on analysis and news evaluation of current trends, as well as open communication with researchers and professors within the university for an up-to-date understanding of the latest scientific studies taking place. You will be expected to carry out tasks in writing and text editing, language editing and working with the visual material that complements the text. For example, images, films, infographics or other illustrations. Chalmers' press releases focus on cutting edge scientific research, within the scope of creating a better, more sustainable future. You therefore need to have the ability to understand and explain scientific discoveries to journalists and media consumers.

You have an important role in creating contacts and building relationships with journalists in newsrooms abroad and you contribute with an overview of the international media landscape.

You will also contribute with editorial expertise for content production across other channels. Due to the fact that you are a native English speaker or have an equivalent level of proficiency in spoken and written English, there will also be some translation assignments as part of the role.

As an International Press Officer, you are expected to be involved in following, analysing and developing the information aimed at the media with Chalmers' media monitoring as a basis. You handle incoming media requests and oversee the Chalmers' Press phoneline and mailbox together with the rest of the Press Team.

Tasks may vary and develop in relation to the needs of the team, the wider university and the media landscape.

Required qualifications and education

• Journalism education or relevant university education

Advantageous education

• Technical or natural science education at university level.
• Video reporter\ edit training or equivalent course/education in film production.

Required experience and skills

• Writing with an editorial focus, wholly or partly in an English-speaking country.
• Excellent knowledge of the English language with a high stylistic ability.

Advantageous experience and skills

• Experience of work in journalism
• Experience of research communication
• Knowledge of the Swedish language, and other languages
• Experience of photography and film production
• Experience of measuring and analysing publicity and visibility
