The Arena:
We are looking to recruit an In Vitro Cardiovascular Safety Senior Scientist to join the In Vitro Cardiovascular Safety team within AstraZeneca's Drug Safety and Metabolism (DSM) function. This position is based in Gothenburg, the In Vitro Cardiovascular Safety team is based in both Cambridge (UK) and Gothenburg (Sweden) allowing you to work in an international environment. Drug Safety and Metabolism (DSM) is a function within Innovative Medicines and Early Development (IMED), AstraZeneca's small molecule biotech unit which deliver candidate drugs into late-stage clinical development. The role of DSM is to characterize absorption, disposition, metabolism and elimination (ADME) properties of compounds, non-clinical toxicology and off-target pharmacology. Working in disease-focused project teams we help to discover efficacious molecules with good safety profiles. DSM is committed to be an industry leader in supporting the discovery and non-clinical development of safe medicines that improve patients' lives.

Tasks and responsibilities/The role:
In the early stages of drug discovery, we use in vitro models for testing novel compounds to detect cardiovascular hazards and enable further testing to screen out unwanted effects. You'll use existing in vitro cardiovascular models to plan, run and report experiments in support of drug discovery and development projects.

You'll be responsible for providing expert advice on your data to safety representatives on project teams. We'll expect you to keep abreast of cardiovascular safety science via the literature, an awareness of new in vitro cell systems and technology platforms, and scientific contacts. This will enable you to influence our in vitro cardiovascular safety strategy, develop our technical problem-solving capabilities, and contribute to our external scientific reputation via publications and presentations.

Minimum requirements:

• A degree in Biological Sciences and relevant experience or a PhD involving high-level technical and intellectual understanding of cellular and molecular biology.

• Work autonomously on a daily basis with strong collaborative skills

• Previous cellular assay development experience Excellent interpersonal skills

• Enthusiasm and aptitude for tackling unfamiliar aspects of cardiovascular safety science

• Ability to comply with Good Laboratory Science standards, Safety, Health and Environment standards and other relevant external regulation.

Preferred experience and key factors:

• Previous experience of use of iPS cells and stem cell derived cardiomyocytes
