Uppsala Monitoring Centre (UMC) is an independent, self-funded, non-profit foundation established in 1978. UMC is a World Health Organisation (WHO) Collaborating Centre and oversees the technical and scientific operations of the WHO Programme for International Drug Monitoring (PIDM). The organisation is custodian of VigiBase, which is the largest global database of suspected adverse events of medicines and vaccines. In addition to working with drug safety signal monitoring, UMC has developed WHODrug Global, which is the world's most widely used drug dictionary, and is advancing pharmacovigilance through science and innovation and education and communication. UMC is governed by a board consisting of members from the Swedish government and WHO and has approximately 160 employees based in Uppsala (Sweden).

The department and section
The WHO CC department has the overall responsibility for UMC's deliveries in its capacity as a WHO Collaborating Centre and serves as an interface between UMC and WHO. The department includes two important line functions/sections with deliverables included in of the agreement with WHO, whereof one is signal management. The responsibility of the signal management section is to produce and share safety signals with pharmacovigilance authorities to support solid and informed decisions, and in this way contributing to the safe use of vaccines and medicines for patients and clinicians globally. The team works closely with WHO's pharmacovigilance team to support in their pharmacovigilance and signal requests to work collaboratively towards advancing medicines safety. UMC's Signal Management section consists of eight scientists and experts in PV and signal assessments with educational backgrounds as medical doctor or pharmacist. The team regularly assist the Education and Training section with expertise on signal assessments and in providing training. Together with other members of a cross functional core area team, section members also contribute to the development of new tools and methods for advancing signal detection work.

Your role
The Head of signal management oversees the daily activities to ensure timely and high-quality deliveries. The role should ensure that the goals and objectives within the core area are fulfilled by supporting, coaching, and mentoring team staff. It also includes interfacing with other line managers and core area team leads within UMC, as well as external collaborators. You will be part of the WHO CC Management Team as well as UMC's All management team. You report to the Head of WHO CC.

Your general responsibilities will be to:

- Create and maintain a well-functioning team in accordance with UMC values and strategies
- Be responsible for leading and developing your personnel in line with UMC policies
- Lead and develop the operations of the section to achieve the objectives and goals designated to the core area
- Coordinate and prioritise day-to-day work according to WHO and PIDM member needs and with the best interest of UMC in mind
- Produce and implement annual work plans for the section, based on core area and the overall UMC goals
- Ensure that budget targets, goals, and deadlines are met for the section
- Continually develop work processes

What you will need to succeed
You have a university/college bachelor's or master's degree in life sciences, medicine, pharmacy, or similar. To be successful in this role, we see that you have at least a couple of years' experience working within pharmacovigilance. It is valuable if you have previous experience of line management. You translate from strategic planning to operational management with ease. You are self-driven and result-oriented with excellent communication skills, both internally and externally, with a clear focus on quality and engagement. You are fluent in written and spoken English.
