The scope of the present Diploma Thesis is to design and build a new experimental test rig for investigating film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient using the semi-infinite assumption and thermochromic liquid crystals. The thesis will be a comprehensive study covering both conventional hole geometries as well as controversial ones such as porous film cooling holes. As a final result the student will use the experimental results for creation of a heat transfer correlation. Furthermore, the experimental data will be subjected to CFD calculations at the institute of applied thermodynamics and fluid mechanics at Linköping University, which will add a further dimension to the work.
Similar test rigs have previously been used by diploma students at the fluid dynamics laboratory at Siemens, Finspång to investigate and develop correlations on pressure losses. All previous studies were accepted for publication in the Journal of Turbomachinery and/or at ASME Turbo Expo (TURBO-14-1171, GT2014-25619, GT2015-42475, GT2017-64143).
What do I need to qualify for this job?
The goal of each of our Diploma Thesis' is to create a work of publication quality. Therefore, our demands on the student are high and you must be familiar with gas dynamics, dimensional similarity, numerical methods and Matlab. You must also be very driven, ambitious and prepared to work hard. Good skills in English language are required both in speech and writing.
What else do I need to know?
Finspång, in the county of Östergötland in central Sweden, is one of the main sites of Siemens in Sweden. Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB (SIT) manufactures world-class gas turbines which are proven units for both power generation and mechanical drive applications and are widely used in the oil and gas industry. They offer outstanding reliability, efficiency and maintainability.
The work will start in the spring of 2017 and be conducted in the fluid dynamic laboratory at the Siemens gas turbine site in Finspång, Sweden. An hourly wage will be offered for 8 months. In special cases, Siemens offer long-distance student accommodation during the thesis project.
