Would you like to develop the oceanographic models of the future? Now the oceanographic unit at SMHI's research department is strengthening the work on ocean and climate related questions in order to meet the needs of society. We offer a stimulating environment with external contacts and flexible working methods.

The oceanographic unit at SMHI's research department conducts research and development on the marine environment, marine climate, and operational oceanography. We work with development of models and analyses of model results and observations in the open sea and the coastal zone with main focus on the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the Arctic. Today 16 researchers are employed at the unit, and the research department has about 110 employees. The research is mainly based on external funding, and the oceanography unit has succeeded in attracting funding at national and European levels.

You will work with research focusing on biogeochemical modeling in the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. For the work, the model NEMO-Nordic-SCOBI, observations, and climate simulations will be used. The tasks will involve qualified analyzes of computer simulations from numerical models as well as participation in the work of further developing our biogeochemical models through implementation / analyzes of biogeochemical processes on shorter and longer time scales. The work includes model development, model validation, process and effect studies as well as analyzes of model simulations and observations.

A good working environment with a balance between work and free time is important for us in order to contribute to the life quality of our employees. We strive for a workplace that is characterized by diversity and where different strengths and experiences can complement each other.

We offer a permanent employment with placement in Norrköping or Gothenburg.

Your profile

You have a PhD in oceanography or a related discipline that the authority deems relevant and experience of analysis- and research work within oceanography and biogeochemistry. You have documented experience with:

• use of coupled physical-biogeochemical ocean models and analysis of output from these,
• scientific publications and oral presentations at international conferences, and
• programing and work with data analyses and statistics through Python or similar programing languages.

Meritorious:

• specialization within biogeochemical ocean modeling,
• experience with statistical methods, analysis of observational data, and validation of models,
• experience with Fortran is a strong merit,
• experience with Linux and/or Unix,
• experience with project proposals, project management, or participation in international networks.

As a person, you have high motivation and interest in working with research and numerical problem solving. You have a great interest in natural science issues in general, as well as marine and climate issues in particular.
