Fibromyalgia, activity and work ability
Application deadline: 2011-05-31
Description of the research project
Long-lasting pain is common in general population. Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by long-lasting pain and a lowered pain threshold. Prevalence of it is 1-3%, increasing with age and female gender. Women with FM present impaired body functions, describe activity limitations in everyday life, and work disability is common. The overall aim of this project is to attain deeper knowledge about factors promote work ability among women with FM. This is a clinical research project, comprising qualitative and quantitative research approach and an intervention study. The aim has been divided into four separate research questions:
1. Which strategies do gainfully employed women with FM apply to manage their work?
2. Do gainfully employed women with FM have a better health in terms of body functions, activity limitations and contextual factors than those with work disability?
3. Is there any difference between gainfully employed women with FM and age-matched gainfully employed healthy women with similar occupations in terms of work load and strain, and which aspect are related to them?
4. Does physical exercise directed to improve muscle strength contribute to enhanced work ability?
The project will increase our understanding about factors that promote work ability among women with FM, which then can be used to develop strategies for prevention and rehabilitation.
Desired background
It is desirable that the applicant has a background in Physical Therapy, interest in research on persons with long-lasting pain, experience of exercise therapy, as well as a capacity to take personal initiatives and work in a team of researchers.
