The Department of Sport Sciences is a broad multidisciplinary environment whose core is sport as a multifaceted societal phenomenon and knowledge area. Our programmes are characterised by a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical understanding with a well-developed action competence. The department offers sport-related programmes on the first- second- and third-cycle levels. Its active and successful sport science research environment comprises a variety of specialisations whose primary focus lies within the social science field. The department also has a well-developed cooperation network within sport practice.
PhD school on the theme Learning in Multicultural Contexts
The PhD school for Learning in Multicultural Contexts gathers doctoral students who are interested in globalisation, multiculturalism and education. Within the framework of five different research education subjects, studies are made of how learning and the organisation of education take place in a society characterised by migration, digitalisation and political mobility. These processes have contributed to a number of new multicultural and transnational contexts shaping childhood and adulthood and leading to transformation within school, society and everyday human life.
https://mau.se/forskning/utbildning-pa-forskarniva/forskarskolor/larande-i-mangkulturella-samhallskontexter/ The sport sciences research education subject specializing in social sciences and the humanities is looking for two doctoral students to form part of the research school for learning in multicultural contexts.
We particularly welcome applications concerning either (1) environmental and sustainability issues or (2) the talent identification, selection and professionalisation of sports for children and youth.
• The growing sport sector produces many positive societal benefits, but also generates undesirable environmental impacts. Functional specialization, urbanization, increased mobility and new technologies drive many of the changes at present, while concurrently they offer opportunities for more sustainable practices not yet realized. In this call we welcome applications concerning relationships between environmental issues, planning practices, knowledge, learning and behavioural changes.
• The phenomenon of talent identification, selection and professionalisation of sports for youth and adolescence is increasing globally. A multitude of projects occur and are financed using government, region and private resources. These projects occur in different contexts, i.e. schools, academies, national federations and local clubs. Therefore, we welcome applications that can contribute to a more complex understanding of the consequences of these phenomena from a societal and, preferably, an international perspective.
Sport sciences specializing in social sciences and the humanities
The focus on research education in Sport Sciences specializing on social sciences and the humanities lies on the forms of sport and on their past, present and future importance to society. The education comprises a range of areas from competitive, recreational and experience sports to sport as a school subject as well as open-air activity and physical recreation. The contribution of sport to society is studied on the basis of problem complexes like sport regulation and normativity, state, market and civil society relation to sport, sport's own selection mechanisms, as well as the way societal structures and social categories, such as gender, ethnicity, sexuality, generation and social class, affect and are affected by sport.
The sport science research environment includes some 15 researchers as well as an almost equal number of research students. The research is multidisciplinary and has a strong societal relevance. The starting point is that societal aspects - like equal opportunity, socioeconomics and cultural diversity - always affect sport while, simultaneously, the importance of sport is sufficiently strong to exert an influence on society.
Content and duties
Those who are employed as doctoral students are expected to primarily devote themselves to their own research education (located at Malmö University). The intended degree is a PhD, which corresponds to a 4-year full-time research education. Departmental duties may amount to a maximum of 20%.
