Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.

The ubiquity of sensor, computing, communication, and storage technologies provides us with access to previously unknown amounts of data-Big Data. It has revolutionized research communities and their scientific methodologies and innovated the approaches to knowledge and theory building, validation, and exploitation in the Sciences and the Humanities. With the foundation of a Linnaeus University Center on "Data Intensive Sciences and Applications" (DISA, https://lnu.se/disa) in Jan 2017, Big Data has officially become a research profile at Linnaeus University.

The advertised position will be physically placed in the Astroparticle Physics group and the candidate will work with Associate Professor Yvonne Becherini who is a member and key researcher of DISA. The thesis will be co-supervised by Associate Professor Sabri Pllana from the Computer Science Department.

The PhD candidate will work in Very-High-Energy gamma-ray astronomy and will participate in the international projects H.E.S.S. and the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). In addition, the candidate will work in the framework of the construction and operation of ALTO, a wide-field and high-altitude gamma-ray observatory to be installed in the southern hemisphere, please visit the website lnu.se/en/ap for more information. All our projects are data intensive and pose huge challenges in data handling, data distribution and data analysis.
