They will collaborate on interdisciplinary research which draws on literature from mathematics, computer science, robotics, and game theory. Join a growing research group developing state-of-the-art algorithms for agentic decision making.
About us
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is based in Gothenburg, Sweden. The department employs approximately 300 people from more than 30 countries, and as such the working language is English. The department is fully integrated between Chalmers and University of Gothenburg. CSE is widely recognized for excellent research and education, with activities on two campuses in the city of Gothenburg. Research in the department has a wide span, from theoretical foundations to applied systems development.
This doctoral position is within the OPTIMA group led by Assistant Professor Anna Gautier. Her group is within the Division of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.
About the research project
This PhD project explores multi-agent decision making from the perspective of Markov Decision Processes (MDPs). MDPs are a planning tool which models how autonomous agents make decisions in an uncertain world. This project focuses on designing systems of interaction between agents in order to achieve complex, multi-objective, and risk-aware goals. MDPs will be utilized to help agents make independent decisions while still respecting joint goals related to safety and trustworthiness. Design perspectives will draw inspiration from game theory, mechanism design, and reinforcement learning. Applications of tools developed in the project include mobile robotics and agentic systems.
