Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?
Barntumörbanken (BTB), or in English: The Swedish Childhood Tumour Biobank, is a national infrastructure and sample collection for childhood tumors.

BTB performs deep sequencing and analysis on the collected samples in collaboration with the National Genomics Infrastructure (NGI) at The Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab), the national centre for large-scale life science research with an advanced technological infrastructure. The aim of BTB is to promote research to increase the understanding of disease mechanisms for tumors in children and thereby contribute to the improvement of patient care and treatment.

BTB is currently also coordinating the national initiative Genomic Medicine Sweden (GMS) for paediatric cancer, with the purpose to implement whole genome sequencing in clinical practise for patients with childhood tumours. We are now looking for a motivated data manager/bioinformatician to contribute in developing sequencing data handling, and analysis, for the projects BTB manages and takes part in. This is an opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary team in a continuously evolving research environment with the latest technologies in the field to support and enable high quality genomic research on childhood cancer.

Your mission
As a data manager/bioinformatician you would be primary responsible for managing large amounts of mainly DNA and RNA sequencing data, from raw data to comprehensively analysed results. The data is then mainly generated internally in collaboration with NGI/SciLifeLab and within the GMS-project. The tasks include to further develop the procedures for data management, including planning and maintaining storage systems, as well as routines for data transfer and documentation.

Additionally, focus will be on testing and maintaining analysis pipelines for the sequencing data both for basic research and for close to clinical application. This would include develop/install/run software and pipelines for analysis, visualization and interpretation of results concerning childhood tumour and paired normal samples.

The work will be performed both at the SciLifeLab and at BTB/Dept. of Pathology-Oncology together with colleagues of different expertise. A part of the job is also to keep up to date and in contact with the appropriate collaborators for NGS-data management.

Your profile
Requested requirements:

PhD or similar experience in computational biology, computer sciences or bioinformatics

Experience in data management and most common bioinformatics data sources and formats

Experience of NGS, and preferably WGS data

Programming skills, such as shell and Python

Vast experience working with Unix/Linux systems

Experience of configuration and maintenance of computer networks

Fluent spoken and written English

Preferred qualifications:

Experience from research in human genomics and transcriptomics, preferably in the area of cancer biology

Experience on developing project technical specifications

Experience in high performance computing, use of computer clusters

Experience on workflow managers such as Nextflow or similar

Experience on the development, generation and use of software containers e.g. Docker, Singularity or similar

Experience in database design and management

Ability to work independently, organized and take initiative

Excellent analytical and problem solving capabilities

Excellent communication, interpersonal skills and team-player.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal competence and suitability
