We are currently looking for an Associate Principal Scientist to join our team in the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases IMED, Gothenburg, Sweden.

As Associate Principal Scientist you will join our diabetes department reporting to the manager of the in vitro islet biology team. You will work with scientists across the CVMD IMED as well as colleagues in global and local cross functional organisations to develop therapeutics improving islet function for the treatment of diabetes. You will lead cross-functional drug discovery teams to develop and validate target ideas and deliver data packages to support target and drug candidate selections. Responsibilities include designing and conduct experiments to support target hypotheses, document data, present to internal and externa stakeholders, manage internal and external collaborations. You will also provide technical expertise across functions and to teams. Help to train, supervise, and mentor junior staff as needed.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

* Supports the development of the Bioscience function by contributing to the leadership and direction of the department by leading small cross-functional project teams and by providing technical expertise in relevant areas
* Supports the delivery of drug discovery projects either by managing or contributing to project teams, from project initiation up to early clinical development
* Oversees the development of innovative projects or contributes significantly to the practical delivery of project goals by providing expert advice and interpreting complex data to resolve issues and make high level recommendations
* Leads and champions new target ideas within own discipline which will aid the department to meet overall strategic objectives
* Designs and implements improvements in technologies and scientific approaches across area of responsibility to improve the quality and effectiveness of projects
* Publishes data in peer reviewed journals and present at international conferences
* Serves as a resource for others by sharing expertise, within and beyond the bioscience function, in own area of expertise or defines and communicates important initiatives to own team
* Collaborates with other functions and ensures communication between teams
* Contributes significantly to determining the viability of new compounds and making decisions about whether the project should develop from the initial drug discovery phase, either as a project manager or a valued expert in the field
* Ensures own work, and work of team, is compliant with Good Laboratory Practice, Safety, Health and Environment standards and all other relevant internal AstraZeneca standards and external regulation

Essential Requirements

* PhD degree in a relevant discipline
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Strong scientific understanding and experience of islet biology
* Well developed understanding of molecular and cellular biology
* Strong publication record
* Excellent influencing, oral and written communication skills.
* Experience of public speaking
* Entrepreneurial thinking

Desirable Requirements

* Post doc experience in a relevant field
* Experience from the pharmaceutical industry and of the drug discovery process
