Karolinska Institutet

Division
Within the Division of Translational Medicine and Chemical Biology (Helleday laboratory), Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Karolinska Institutet, the physical location will be at Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) Stockholm

Our vision, within the Helleday Laboratory, is to translate the findings from our basic research programmes on DNA repair and survival mechanisms within cancer cells, to identification of novel anticancer targets and development of anti-cancer drugs with minimal side-effects.

Our goal is to develop our hypotheses in preclinical models, and then proceed to study the effect and underlying mechanisms of new cancer treatments in patients. In order to do this, we have created an integrated translational strategy, with teams of scientists from a variety of disciplines taking our basic findings all the way from bench to bedside.

We are working in a dynamic research environment, which is well positioned to take advantage of the state-of-the-art platforms at SciLifeLab, we have several established and fruitful collaborations with Stockholm and Uppsala universities and many of our researchers have experience both from academia and the pharmaceutical industry. We are based at SciLifeLab, Karolinska Institutet, where we perform high-throughput screening, basic molecular and cell biology, biochemistry, systems biology, pharmacology and medicinal chemistry.

Today the research group consists of around 30 people. We now wish to expand this number with another 8-10 scientists to meet the ambitious milestones we have set for the next few years.

For a more comprehensive description of our different projects and an overview of our group, please visit our website www.helleday.org

Duties & Entry requirements
While our pioneering work on applying the concept of synthetic lethality in cancer treatment has shown great potential, the rapid advance of knowledge on the genetic make-up of individual tumours is not matched by an equally large choice of synthetic lethal compounds or genetic targets. The systems medicine team, therefore aims to develop and apply technology to uncover human (chemo)-genetic interactions on a large scale and subsequently develop these into new targeted therapies for personalized medicine. In addition, (chemo)-genetic interaction networks may help in identifying targets of new drugs as well as functions of newly discovered genes, by comparing their interaction patterns to those of known drugs/genes and thus build (chemical)-genetic interaction networks.

We are now looking for an enthusiastic mathematical biologist to complement our systems medicine team. The successful candidate will work in a small team that sets up and carries out high-throughput RNAi and chemical screens in our state of the art screening facility in order to build and analyze (chemical)-genetic interaction networks.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD and be highly familiar with applied systems biology approaches and analysis. Experience or an active interest in high-throughput screening, technology development and large scale data-analysis are considered an advantage.

Eligible applicants will have a well-documented track record of relevance to the employment. All the successful candidates will need a strong passion for daily experimental work and an aptitude for analysing, managing, interpreting and reporting data to the project team. The work will be performed in multidisciplinary and multicultural project teams and in close collaboration with other academic research groups and clinicians in Sweden. Therefore, the ability to communicate well in English (both oral and written) is highly desirable. In addition to actively participating in research projects, some teaching may be required. The successful candidates should have very good interpersonal and cooperation skills, be flexible and capable of working in a structured and efficient way. The successful candidates should also be able to contribute to the innovative and entrepreneurial climate existing within the group.

Karolinska Institutet promotes equality and values the qualities that ethnic and cultural diversity can bring to the university.

Employment form: two year project employment, with potential to be prolonged.

Application process
The application is to be submitted on the NetRecruiter system.
