Industrial PhD Student (VIPP) in Data Science - AI methods for intention recognition and prediction
Who are we?
Data is transforming the society and business in an ever-increasing rate and scale, and the Big Data group is committed to position Volvo Cars among the best in the discipline. This is achieved by constantly evolving state-of-the-art methodology, maintaining the technical center of excellence, research collaborations, and owning the resources required to process the vast amounts of data involved. The Big Data group interacts closely to challenge itself and find new, stimulating perspectives where the use of Big Data methods revolutionize and strengthen various parts of the company and our products.
What will you do?
Your main activity would be research on algorithms, platforms, methods and tools for intention recognition. Intention recognition is the task of inferring an agent's intention based on its previous actions. It is crucial for human social intelligence which in turn enables understanding of, and the ability to predict, other humans' behaviors, such as other drivers' intent to overtake, stop, turn, or switch lanes. For making situation-based decisions, both autonomous and human drivers need to take the intentions of surrounding vehicles into account. This is especially true in a situation of mixed autonomous and human drivers.
As an industrial PhD student, you will be active in the project - Intention Recognition for Real-time Automotive 3D situation awareness (IRRA). The project will go beyond state-of-the-art research and develop new algorithms for intention recognition in specific use cases. This is a field in artificial intelligence (AI) that has not yet fully taken advantage of the data-driven revolution that in recent years has taken for example machine learning and computer vision into industrial applicability. The project will develop internationally publishable new results in several currently active AI areas. The IRRA project is a collaboration between Volvo Cars, University of Skövde, Swedish Institute of Computer Science, Swedish Transport Administration Authority (Trafikverket) and SmartEye AB.
As an industrial PhD student, you will be working closely with the Technical Expert at Big Data group and additional participation in company wide data science network. The PhD program is a collaboration between Volvo Cars and Skövde Artificial Intelligence Lab (SAIL) within the School of Informatics at the University of Skövde, where you will be enrolled as a PhD student. As a member of the Volvo PhD Program, you're offered a permanent position with Volvo Cars from day 1, and upon completion of the PhD, your role is redefined within the company to assume the next level position. Location of employment is at Volvo Cars Corporation, Gothenburg.
Your daily work will include:
* Perform research, participate in conferences, and write journal and conference papers
* Participate in courses and other educational activities within the hosting research school
* Document design and quality guidelines for intention recognition models for real time automotive 3D situation awareness from an industrial perspective
* Proactive participation in Big Data groups deliverables
You and your skills
To qualify as an industrial PhD student, you must have a solid background in Computer Science or engineering or in a related discipline, corresponding to a master's level degree i.e. completed academic courses of at least 240 credits (ECTS) of which at least 60 credits (ECTS) are at advanced level including independent thesis writing of at least 15 credits (ECTS) at advanced level, within the field Informatics. As for all PhD studies, a genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical and communication skills, both oral and written, are needed. The ideal candidate for the position has a strong background in data science and machine learning.
It would be a merit if you have a background within artificial intelligence and data science with additional competence in the areas of: Intention Recognition, Machine Learning, Automated Reasoning, Causality, Cognitive modeling, Qualitative reasoning, Spatio-temporal reasoning. Further experience with interdisciplinary projects or background in behavioral sciences is advantageous.
On a personal level you are independent and self-driven individual, who has the ability to communicate results to non-technical audience. You have a rational thinking, analytical reasoning and problem solving skills. At work you are organized and structured and you believe in being transparent and follow up on the work that has been done.
