Avalanche Studios is looking for an experienced, exceptionally talented technical designer with a passion for physics and physics simulations. As a technical designer your work will be focused around what you like to do the most: building great open world games! With the support and direction from the creative lead you will work with all the members within the team, crossing disciplines and flexibly adapting to the needs of different strike teams. You will be a major link between content creators and coders, and a central figure in the development process. Avalanche Studios is developing for next gen platforms.
Among your tasks:
set up, script and maintain modular building blocks for content creators to use
create advanced physics and destruction setups
help with debugging code and content issues
create and maintain workflows and rulesets for content creators to adhere to
take a feature or game prop from a prototype stage to a fully playable feature
design in-house tools in collaboration with programmers and content creators
support designers in tuning and balancing key aspects of the game
write/design gameplay specifications for programmers
document editor features
help maintain tools bug and features database
given the right context, you have a keen eye for what works well and what doesn’t, even before a feature or prop is being built
to always keep emergent gameplay as a cornerstone in the design of any game feature or prop
Required qualifications
5+ years industry experience as programmer or technical designer
One or more games shipped as programmer or technical designer
Significant experience with Havok Physics and with physics simulations
Significant scripting experience
Working experience of giving high and low level design and technical feedback to other designers (as well as accept criticism)
You’re articulate, have strong conceptual skills and the ability to communicate your ideas visually and verbally
A knack for finding synergies in tools and game features
Passion for games and ability to articulate that passion clearly and analytically
Desired qualifications
Interest in physics and mathematics
Experience from open world titles
Knowledge of Maya or Max
Encyclopedic game culture
You’ve built a Rube Goldberg machine
