hela Sverige Software implementation in scalable computational node for 360 degree LIDAR perception, navigation and autonomous driving of FMX construction truck
Construction trucks are designed for driving on rough road conditions. They have a stronger chassis configuration compared to baseline trucks, and are equipped with different levels of traction capabilities. In near future, some applications such as in mining, the fully autonomous vehicles will be introduced to improve vehicle productivity and safety. To succeed with the automation of the vehicles, extensive computational power will be needed to make vehicle environment observations, predictions, and decision making, in addition the system must be fault tolerant and redundant. The vehicle is equipped with lidar sensors which gives a 360 degree view to generate clouds for navigation . The software is programmed in c++ on a Linux OS. Efficient coding and parallel processing is key enabler to succeed to generate efficient real-time code. The code is aimed to be implemented in a scalable computational node.
Description of Summer Work
The purpose of this summer work contains of two parts:
1. Functional partitioning of existing software according to Volvo internal reference architecture. Improve efficiency of the existing code by parallel processing and reformulation of identified slow algorithm formulations. Test main functionality on evaluation boards.
2. Implementation in a prototype of a scalable computational node together with HW/SW developers of the node. (Physical testing with full automation at Hällered construction track is planned after summer 2017.)
Suitable Background
The summer work will include advanced programming, parallel processing of real time systems within automation. The work will be carried out Volvo Group Trucks Technology and likely also at CPAC. The summer work is recommended for a student with software, physical modelling, and control analysis profile with good mathematical skills. Knowledge about Robot Operating System (ROS) is also beneficial.
