The Department of Aquatic Resources conducts environmental monitoring and assessment, consulting, research and education in aquatic ecology with focus on fish and shellfish. The department is SLU's largest and has more than 180 employees at three main locations: Lysekil, Öregrund and Stockholm (Drottningholm), as well as four field stations.
The department is highly focused on data collection and analysis of fish, fisheries and ecosystems, and is characterized by intensive collaborations with industry, public agencies and NGO:s. You will integrate a team of motivated environmental analysts that are responsible for survey design and data analysis of Swedish fisheries and delivery of estimates to national and international end-users. This position has the ultimate goal of improving the quality of estimates of commercial and recreational fisheries estimates that form the basis of stock assessment and fisheries management. Your main duties will involve:
• Developing new statistical surveys of commercial and recreational fisheries
• Updating existing sampling programmes and estimation methods
• Participating in the development and revision of guidelines for fisheries data collection
• Participating as expert, delegate or chair in national and international meetings and contributing to the drafting of reports
• Training of SLU Aqua's staff in the area of survey design and statistics
• Statistical advice to various research projects
• Other duties within your area of expertise
Your workplace will be in Lysekil (west coast of Sweden, between Gothenburg and Oslo) but you will also spend some time in meetings abroad and in other places of Sweden. A minor proportion of your time will be spent in field surveys.
Qualifications:
We are looking for a candidate with strong quantitative skills and good knowledge of statistical survey sampling. You must be at least an MSc in statistics or natural sciences, be proficient in R language and a have documented experience in design and estimation of complex sampling programmes. Previous experience with fisheries data or work for statistics organizations and departments will be favorably considered.
We put great emphasis on your personal qualities and work experience. You should be able to meet tight deadlines, quickly familiarizing yourself with new problem areas, identifying the key issues and make situational judgements. It is important you have a good ability to interact with others and be able to work both independently and in group. In this position you will need to speak and write fluently in English. Knowledge of Swedish is not essential but will be favorably considered. If you do not yet speak Swedish, you are expected to start learning the language soon after you start your position.
