The successful candidate will join a team of senior researchers, postdocs and PhD students dedicated to research aimed to identify and evaluate pathways towards sustainable European energy systems. As a research engineer in the group you will help to develop and maintain the modelling infrastructure of the research group, as well as contribute to the development of new methods and modelling approaches.

Information about the division/the project
The division of Energy technology has a long unique experience in the field of energy systems analysis and development of methods in energy system modeling. The focus of the research is to understand how more sustainable energy systems can be designed and operated, including the challenges and opportunities with integrating renewable energy sources and electrification of new sectors from city level to a European scale. The research group has several in-house developed energy system models. The models are techno-economic bottom-up models formulated as linear programming problems. Methods and models are continuously developed within the different research projects and include a multitude of flexibility measures and energy carriers.

Job description
Your main responsibilities as a senior research engineer is to develop and maintain the modeling infrastructure of the research group. New methods are developed together with PhD students and senior researchers in the group in the context of different projects and require deep knowledge and experience in energy system modelling.

As senior research engineer your task will also be to ensure that the models applied in the group take advantage of the method development in each project and that there will be a structured management of the models and software as well as hardware shared in the research group. Since the models rely on large sets of data, part of the work will be to identify, access and manage large data sets, such as in databases. The work includes identifying and setting up structures for efficient collaboration around models and data in the research group. You will also apply models to generate a first analysis which form the basis for other research or research applications.

Even though the position involves participating in research, sometimes with co-authorship of journal publications as a natural outcome, this position is not intended for those aiming for an academic career but offers a permanent position including active participation in the research activities of the group as well as practical matters concerning energy system models and methods.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position you need to have a PhD in a relevant field (such as system analysis and/or Energy system modelling). You also need documented experience of using and developing energy system models, as well as working with Python, GIS and GAMS or similar high-level modeling languages. We expect you to have a proven good knowledge of applied optimization and it is meritorious to have a good understanding of solvers for optimization problems and experience in tuning solver settings for a given model formulation. Furthermore, to qualify for this position you need documented experience of working with and managing large dataset.

It is also required to have proven pedagogical skills and experience from teaching on advanced level as well as from working in interdiciplinary teams. As a significant part of the work involves supporting PhD and master's students in the implementation and testing of computer models, it is important that the applicant is used to team work and enjoy working with students while giving them room to develop as researchers. Interest in the areas of AI and machine learning is a benefit as this might be important in future development of the modelling tools.

Excellent writing and communication in English is required.
