Subject area

The subject of anatomy and histology of domestic animals includes knowledge of the structure of organisms, from the animal as a whole to the characteristics of cells. Specialisation is primarily in livestock, animals used for sport and companion animals. The development of research and teaching methods within the subject are also included.

Duties

The applicant must:

• lead, plan, evaluate and participate in practical and theoretical subject teaching
• work with examinations at first, second, and third-cycle levels on all areas of anatomy and histology, primarily for the veterinary medicine and veterinary nursing programmes, as well as first, second, and third-cycle courses within veterinary medicine and animal science
• be prepared to teach the anatomy of internal organs as well as organ and tissue histology
• develop instruction methods and the use of digital tools
• develop and lead internationally recognised research within the field that links to SLU and the faculty's specialisations
• collaborate with both internal and external researchers
• develop and maintain national and international networks with researchers, society, and industry
• compete for external research funding
• share and communicate research findings and other relevant information to society at large
• perform administrative tasks and duties within the department, faculty and university
• be able to use Swedish as the working language within two years.

As the department's courses are given in Swedish, the successful applicant will be expected to have working knowledge of the language within two years of taking up the position. The department will provide support with language learning.

Qualifications

The applicant must:

• hold a first-cycle qualification in veterinary medicine
• have successfully completed a doctoral degree in a subject relevant to the position
• demonstrate scientific proficiency in the subject
• demonstrate proficiency in subject teaching
• completed training in teaching and learning in higher education corresponding to 10 weeks or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge
• have experience of teaching various levels
• have good knowledge of English, both written and spoken.

Assessment criteria

The skills and proficiency of each candidate will be assessed to ensure that they meet the application criteria.

The assessment of scientific proficiency will be based on:

• completed and ongoing research and its relevance and development potential for the faculty
• ability to independently initiate and run innovative and internationally recognised research
• scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals
• ability to compete for external research funding.

The following will be taken into consideration when assessing teaching proficiency:

• course planning, implementation and examination as well as an evaluation of personal teaching skills
• supervision and examination of first, second, and third-cycle students
• ability to integrate research and scientific approaches to teaching work
• training in teaching and learning in higher education or the equivalent knowledge.

The following will also be assessed:

• the ability to develop and lead activities and staff within academia
• communicate and collaborate internally and externally
• collaborate with external stakeholders and society at large
• share information about research and research findings both internally and externally
• apply digital methods such as data processing, image analysis and visualisation technology to research, teaching and communication
• collaborate, take responsibility and be flexible.

Teaching and research experience related to livestock, animals used for sport and domestic animals is desirable.
The appointment offered to the applicant who, following a qualitative comprehensive assessment, is deemed to have the best skills set to conduct and develop the duties in question, and contribute to the positive development of the organisation.
