The School of Global Studies (IGS) at the University of Gothenburg is an interdisciplinary environment with PHd programmes in social anthropology, social science environmental studies, and peace and development research. Social anthropology is offered at first-cycle level and is also included as a specialisation within the Bachelor's programme in Global Studies and in Cultural Heritage Studies. The subject is also part of the Master's programme in Global Studies at second-cycle level.

Subject area:
Social Anthropology

Specific subject description:
At the School of Global Studies, social anthropology research is done within a number of areas linked in different ways to cultural and social processes in our globalised world. Climate, migration, religion, gender, cultural heritage, technology, economy, health, material culture and indigenous peoples are examples of themes that researchers and teachers work with. At the School, the subject has been characterised by research that is based on lengthy ethnographic field work and participant observation. In addition, the research has strong ties to matters linked to everyday life and to how the practices and experiences that are a central part of people's everyday lives interact with general social processes.

Job assignments:
The position involves teaching on study programmes and courses within the field of social anthropology. Teaching will be primarily at first-cycle and second-cycle level but may also involve work at third-cycle level. Teaching will include courses in social anthropology, interdisciplinary study programmes and freestanding courses.

The post will include continuing professional development/research at least in accordance with the current working hours agreement for teachers at the University of Gothenburg. The successful candidate is expected to take a leading role in developing the subject by developing research and education within social anthropology and by taking part in the interdisciplinary work and environments of the school.

In addition to the work tasks specified in the job profile, the successful candidate is expected to take part in the school's internal work and educational development and, when necessary, take on administrative and management tasks. Externally financed research is an important prerequisite for the research done by the school and individual teachers and the work tasks linked to this post include proactive participation in applying for external funding.

Eligibility:
The qualification requirements for teachers are stated in Chapter 4 Section 3-4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the University of Gothenburg's own appointments procedure. A person with a Degree of Doctor and demonstrated educational expertise is qualified to be employed as a senior lecturer.

Assessment:
During the appointment process, equal weight will be attached to research and educational expertise. Research and teaching related to the themes and fields of research embraced by the subject at the school will be seen as being particularly useful qualifications. For the assessment of research expertise, special weight will be attached to research and publications of recent years and the ability to initiate and conduct research in relevant fields, both independently and together with others. Applicants are required to have international academic qualifications. The application must include a precise documentation of such qualifications.

The assessment of educational expertise will cover the planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching, and supervision and examination. Educational expertise must be well documented so that quality can also be assessed. Weight will also be attached to administrative expertise, experience of work in interdisciplinary environments, and the ability to interact with the local community and impart information about research and developments. The applicant should have good collaborative skills. The applicant must be able to teach, supervise and examine students in both Swedish and English.

Additional information:
Potential candidates are advised to study the document "Rules of the Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences when recruiting and appointing teachers" containing the regulations governing faculty hiring in the University's social science departments. The document can be obtained from the link below:

The selection process can involve sample lectures, interviews and references. After assessment of all aspects of the applicant's skills that are relevant for this position, the person who is considered best qualified to carry out the required tasks, cooperate with other staff and contribute to the development of our School will be selected.

The successful applicant is expected to be in sufficient control of the Swedish language to be able to perform administrative and pedagogical tasks and external cooperation in Swedish after two years of employment.

All teachers must, within one year of their appointment, have completed training in teaching and learning in higher education equivalent to 15 higher education credits or otherwise acquired the equivalent knowledge.

Applications should be written in English so that international experts can be hired.
