The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 47 500 students and 6 400 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The School of Global Studies (SGS) is an innovative university environment for research and education on globalization and global issues. We seek applicants who wish to work in a dynamic, international and interdisciplinary setting.

Subject area description
We announce this position opening in Social Anthropology in conjunction with the inauguration of a new BSc programme in social anthropology that specializes in applied anthropology (the programme opens autumn 2019). Social anthropology at the School of Global Studies builds on a tradition of detailed empirical fieldwork including methods such as long-term participant-observation; textual, visual and archival research; interviews; elicitation techniques; and collaborative methods such as digital mapping and photo-narration. At the core of our research are lived life, everyday praxis, and the workings of power. Our approach is comparative and reflexive and we carry out both basic and applied research. We address classical theoretical problems such as the boundaries between persons and things, waste and value, the sacred and the secular, social organisation and the formation of subjectivities, as well as contemporary social issues related to migration, integration, climate change, precarity and collective action.

The School of Global Studies invites junior and senior applicants for a position in the Social anthropology subject area.

Job assignments
Teaching will be primarily at the undergraduate level in the social anthropology BSc programme, which is taught in Swedish. Pedagogical duties may also involve teaching at the MA level in Global Studies and/or Global Health, as well as at the doctoral level. The successful applicant will also be expected to participate in research in social anthropology, the School's curricular development and to perform administrative and leadership tasks as necessary.

External funding is important for financing the research activities of the School's teaching staff. The successful applicant will also be expected to actively apply for external research funding.

Assessment
In the selection process equal weight will be given to research and teaching. In the evaluation of research skills, particular weight will be given to the applicant's work in recent years and the ability to initiate and conduct research independently and in collaboration with others. Scientific skill should be demonstrated by research and publications within social anthropology and fields relevant to the applicant's specialisation. Demonstrated experience conducting research as an applied anthropologist is a merit. The ability to attract external funding is also a merit. The specific area of social anthropology research is open and may include health, migration, gender, indigenous groups, development, sustainability, conflict resolution, business and organisational anthropology or any other field of specialisation that contributes to social anthropology at the School of Global Studies. Assessment of teaching includes pedagogical planning, delivery, evaluation, supervision and examination. Pedagogical achievements should be well documented so that their quality can be assessed. Administrative skills are also considered important, as are the ability to collaborate with and contribute to society at large and to disseminate information about research to multiple audiences. As teaching is done in both Swedish and English, proficiency in both languages is required.

After assessment of all aspects of the applicant's skills that are relevant for this position, the person who is considered best qualified to carry out the required tasks, cooperate with other staff and contribute to the development of the School of Global Studies will be selected.

The evaluation criteria are spelled out in the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg.
