At AstraZeneca we harness digital, data science & AI to fast-forward our research. Making sure the work born in a lab can make a real difference in the real world. Working here means thinking big, taking responsibility, and working together to deliver impact from our contributions that make the impossible a reality.
As we expand our operations within data science domain, we have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Graph Data Scientist at our vibrant AstraZeneca R&D site in Gothenburg. This position is located within the Data Sciences & Quantitative Biology department - a global, diverse and delivery focused department where we collaborate to support drug projects striving to impact patients' lives. In partnership with our experimentalist colleagues and other data scientists, we provide computational analysis and solutions to enable and improve output from our technical platforms driving our drug discovery efforts.
What you'll do
In this role, you'll be using graph data science skills to explore and exploit biomedical knowledge graphs, a vast resource containing collective biological insights from numerous databases and experimental datasets. You will work closely with other data scientists and subject-matter experts, focusing on these graphs for various tasks within the scope of a general drug discovery pipeline.
Biomedical knowledge graphs contain extensive amounts of insights - aggregated and structured into a graph. The next step would be to work on how we can get from specific nodes or relationships in the graph to answering new biological questions. In this role you will focus on unravelling hidden patterns by for example investigating connectivity between different entities or by community/similarity detection. You will have the creative freedom to think, reason and explore different approaches!
Who you are
Our team is a highly collaborative group of scientists, working in a constantly evolving technical and scientific landscape. We, therefore, expect you to have a passion for driving scientific questions and to be comfortable working at a fast-paced environment. You can work independently and have a positive, result oriented and pragmatic attitude. You have excellent communication skills as well as a proactive and delivery-focused approach.
Essential for the role:
* A PhD - or comparable level of experience - in bioinformatics, or similar quantitative field
* Expertise in graph theory and graph data science concepts/algorithms, e.g. centrality measures, shortest-path, path expansion queries
* Hands-on experience with graph database technologies and query languages, in particular Neo4j/Cypher
* Advanced programming skills in Python, or similar high-level language
Desirable for the role
* Experience with experimental biomedical and/or clinical data is a big plus
* Familiarity with JavaScript language and front end UI development
* Knowledge in writing scalable, well-documented and reproducible code, especially in concert with version management via Git
* Familarity with command-line tools, high-performance computing and/or cloud compute environments
* Proven track record of publishing and/or presenting relevant analysis results and tools in peer-reviewed journals, conferences, and other scientific proceedings
