Anställningsform: Tillsvidareanställning
Omfattning: 100 %
Placering: MAX IV-laboratoriet, Lund
Tillträde: As agreed
Diarienummer: PEPA 2014/292
MAX IV Laboratory, a part of Lund University, has operated successfully for more than 25 years and is currently building the new MAX IV synchrotron facility in Lund.
More than 900 scientists from Sweden and the rest of the world are coming to the MAX IV Laboratory every year to use the x-rays produced by our electron accelerators. They do research in areas such as materials science, structural biology, chemistry, and nanotechnology.
160 people are currently employed at the MAX IV Laboratory. The MAX IV facility, the largest and most ambitious Swedish investment in research infrastructure, will be the brightest source of x-rays worldwide and will replace the existing laboratory, which today consists of the storage rings MAX I, II and III. The new MAX IV facility will become operational in June 2016.
To extend the suite of already funded beamlines, MAX IV Laboratory is planning a beamline called MedMAX to support fundamental medical and biological research to be installed at the 3 GeV storage ring.
MedMAX is the concept of a dedicated beam line for bio-medical imaging utilising the unique brilliance and coherence of the MAX IV facility in the energy range of 5 keV up to several tens of keV at the 3GeV ring. The beam line will exploit the high coherence and flux using mainly phase-contrast imaging techniques, which offers excellent soft-tissue contrast with regards to biologically relevant structural and density variations over length scales ranging from nm to cm, from the atomic to the anatomic. This will allow scientists to understand functional and pathological mechanisms in model organisms, the onset of disease, in-vivo and in-situ from the sub-cellular to whole organs.
Further significant medical application include elemental analysis (spectroscopy) for the 3D mapping of specific elements which allows to study exposure to toxic elements, the effects of diet, climate and migration in historic osteologic samples, drug uptake and distribution and the development of new contrasting agents. This beam line will further be used for radio-biological experiments to investigate the effect of local energy-depositions and its implications for radiation protection and radiotherapy.
A consortium including Lund University, Region Skåne and the Medicon Village Foundation has provided initial funding to undertake the conceptual and technical design studies.
To this end, the MAX IV laboratory is looking for a scientist with a strong background in hard X-ray synchrotron X-ray instrumentation and bio-medical imaging to lead the development effort and later oversee the construction project of the MedMAX beam line.
Publiceringsdatum2014-05-19Dina arbetsuppgifterThe successful candidate will have the following major responsibilities:
• Oversee the development, construction and commissioning of the MedMAX beamline from its conceptual stage to full operation
• Actively strengthen the user community for the beamline
• The responsibility for the operation of the beamline
• Liaise with Stakeholders & Fundraisers
The position offers the possibility to dedicate part of his/her time for other research and development projects.
Önskvärda kvalifikationer
The following qualifications are considered as relevant and highly desirable for the position:
• PhD or equivalent in Engineering, Physics, Medicine or another field relevant to the scientific scope of the MedMAX beamline
• Minimum of 5 years of documented experience of working at synchrotron facilities
• In-depth knowledge in X-ray optics & instruments for hard X-ray synchrotron beamlines
• Demonstrated experience with phase-contrast tomography, both as regards methods and instrumentation
• Experience of designing and operating a data management and data analysis environment
• Professional project management expertise and experience
The work requires good communication and interpersonal skills. Other qualifications that are important are independence, initiative ability, willingness to learn new skills and the ability to lead and motivate others. Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal are required. Readiness for infrequent travel is assumed.
