The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 38 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher in the fields of analytical chemistry, skin biology and mass spectrometry. The available position is part of a recently granted project financed by Hudfonden.

The focus of this project is to continue to develop a chemical imaging methodology for the study of allergen skin penetration by the use of ToF-SIMS and MALDI. The method that has been developed in a collaboration between the Sahlgrenska Academy and Chalmers University of Technology can help reduce the number of animal experiments while providing new opportunities to develop pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Chemical imaging allows all layers of the skin to be seen and the presence of virtually any substance in any part of the skin to be measured with a very high degree of precision. The project will involve developing the method to provide a basis for determining the relationship between exposure levels on the skin and the degree of penetration of chemicals into the skin. In order to establish those relationships, we will examine how much of the dose on the skin's surface penetrates into and through the skin and further what effects this may have on the cellular level. The approach in this project can therefore enhance our knowledge about what we are absorbing in our workplaces and in childcare facilities.

The position is a collaboration with Chalmers University of technology within the Centre for Skin Research in Gothenburg.

Job assignments

The successful applicant will be responsible for imaging mass spectrometry analysis, performing skin exposure experiments ex vivo, sample preparation of skin tissue for ultra-high vacuum as well as data mining and statistical analysis. As the position is a collaboration between Dept. of Dermatology, Sahlgrenska Academy and the Dept. of Analytical Chemistry at Chalmers University of Technology, the successful applicant will be a key person in this collaboration and the progress of the project.

Qualifications

PhD with a focus on analytical chemistry, biosciences, bioengineering or a similar field. Excellent communications skills in English and a strong publication record. Expertise in mass spectrometry imaging, good knowledge of tissue handling and familiarity with multivariate data analysis techniques are strong assets.

To be successful in our science environment you also need to be highly motivated and energetic but also flexible and cooperative.

Employment

Temporary, full time employment for 12 month. Placed at the Institute of Clinical Sciences, Gothenburg. Starting date; First of January or as agreed.
