Kort beskrivning av företaget:
The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 37 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell - what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of microorganisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them. At present, the institute has about 350 employees and approximately 290 million SEK in total assets.
Beskrivning av arbetsuppgifter:
A 1-year position in Christine Wennerås' research group at the Department of Infectious Diseases is open, starting as soon as convenient. Eosinophilic granulocytes are innate immune cells involved in the defense against parasites and in various allergic and inflammatory disorders. Eosinophils are also prominent in the esophagus of patients afflicted by eosinophilic esophagitis, a new disease of possibly allergic etiology. Eosinophilia may be a positive prognostic factor in graft-versus-host disease following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Both eosinophilic esophagitis and graft-versus-host disease are T cell-driven inflammatory conditions. Lately, eosinophils have been shown to be able to regulate T cell responses. The goal is to study the capacity of human eosinophils to regulate T cell responses. Eosinophils derived from healthy persons, patients with eosinophilic esophagitis as well as from allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients are investigated. We wish to establish if there are subpopulations of eosinophils with regulatory function, identify immune regulatory mechanisms, and relate the presence or absence of such regulatory eosinophils in the blood and tissues of patients with disease outcomes.
Beskrivning av kvalifikationer:
PhD is an absolute requirement. Experimental experience of leukocyte biology encompassing cell isolation and culture methods, flow cytometry, ELISA, imaging techniques such as confocal microscopy and PCR is looked-for. Knowledge of basic immunology including human immunology is desirable. Good interpersonal skills, including ability to interact with hospital personnel is necessary. Fluency in English and Swedish is advantageous.
