The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.
The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as zoonotic ecology.
Job description:
The research group in marine plankton ecology is looking for a research assistant to work on a project examining the connection between future climate scenarios in coastal and offshore environments and the dynamics, composition and function of the phytoplankton community with a focus on picoplankton. The project will include both studies of seasonal succession from environmental sampling as well as targeted manipulation experiments. The candidate is expected to develop the research area and the ability to initiate, manage and conduct research projects independently is essential. The position mainly consists of research but will include close collaboration and supervision of undergraduate, masters and graduate students. Active participation in seminars, other project activities and application for external research funding is also required.
The study is part of a larger multidisciplinary project that seeks to understand the diversity, ecology and physiology of microbial plankton communities within a climate change perspective. The research will be conducted in collaboration with other scientists within the framework of the Strong Research Environment ECOCHANGE and the Centre for Ecology and Evolution in Microbial model Systems (EEMiS) within Linnaeus University that comprises expertise in ecology, evolution, and microbiology.
Requirements
Applicants who have defended their doctoral thesis in marine ecology, microbiology, molecular biology or similar, or have acquired the equivalent scientific skills in other manner are qualified to apply. Applicants who have defended their doctoral thesis or in other manner acquired the equivalent skills no more than seven years before the application deadline will primarily be considered (the Higher Education Ordinance, chap 4, section 12 a).
In order to qualify for this appointment, the applicant must also have previous postdoctoral experience of at least two years, preferably abroad. The applicant should have excellent scientific records and the ability to contribute to research within the marine plankton ecology group. The applicant should have documented expertise of field research and advanced knowledge in microbial and molecular methods. The candidate should have previous research experience in Baltic Sea ecology. The ability to independently initiate, manage and develop research projects and obtain funds for research in competition should be documented. The candidate should have a high proficiency in written and spoken English, excellent problem-solving skills, be highly motivated, creative and work independently.
Assessment grounds
Other assessment criteria are the applicant's interest in biotechnology applications of algal research. Experience of working with biological nitrogen fixation in aquatic environments and working in international collaborations and networks are considered favourable. We attach great importance to social and personal characteristics required to meet the demands of the position.
In the overall assessment of an applicant's skills, particular significance will be attached to the applicant's potential to pursue a successful career as a teacher and researcher.
