SIPRI seeks a French-speaking Project/Research Assistant for the project Strengthening Civil Society contributions to peace, security and development in Mali, to support the project team in Sweden and Mali by carrying out a wide range of administrative and practical tasks.

About SIPRI
Established in 1966, SIPRI is consistently ranked as one of the world's top think tanks. The institute is dedicated to independent research into peace, conflict and security and is known worldwide for its flagship publication, the SIPRI Yearbook, and its databases. SIPRI is based in Stockholm, and has well-established, on-the-ground partnerships and operational networks across the globe. The staff of SIPRI is international and the working language is English.

The project
The lack of peace, security and development in Mali is a major obstacle to economic, social and human development. A genuine and sustainable peace requires the involvement of local populations and, by extension, the full participation of civil society.

This SIPRI project, in partnership with a civil society organization in Mali, supports civil society actors in Mali to generate increased knowledge and understanding of conflict dynamics and develop a joint strategy for their contributions to peace, security and development.

The Project/Research Assistant will:
• act as a principal resource person for all matters related to administration and finance of the project at SIPRI as well as with the partner organization in Mali;
• organize travel and project related logistics and admin;
• assist with the organization of workshops and other meetings in Mali and in Sweden;
• interpret and translate unofficial documents in French and English;
• assist in the preparation of fact sheets, background papers and articles on issues of relevance to the project; and
• contribute to ad hoc project activities as they emerge.

The Project/Research Assistant's duties are primarily operational.

Qualifications and essential attributes
• an interest in and understanding of issues relating to international peace and security;
• an academic degree in a discipline relevant to peace, security and development in African countries;
• fluency in written and spoken English and French;
• experience in organizing conferences and other events;
• good organizational skills and the ability to work under pressure;
• ability to work independently and as part of a team;
• an interest in and understanding of issues relating to international peace and security;
• excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office;

In addition, experience of working with civil society organizations in francophone Africa is desirable.

The appointment will be for a period starting as soon as possible and lasting until the end of May 2015. The salary package will be negotiated individually.
