We seek a project assistant to work in a project related to the notion of "ageism" which is a casual or systematic prejudice, stereotyping and discriminating against individuals or groups on the basis of their age. This work will be a valuable and important step in order to understand the presence of ageing and older age (?60 years) on various types of Swedish online news media (mainly newspapers and magazines). The focus will be how various age spans are represented in the news with focus on the elderly.
The assignment is to apply methods and techniques from Natural Language Processing/Computational linguistics in order to develop, analyze, extract and collate evidence from Swedish news media representations of older ages and ageing and compile, aggregate and present results (visualizations) in novel ways. You might need to develop, evaluate and deploy efficient models and tools for experimenting with the textual data.
We collaborate by regular meetings and your work contributes to scientific progress which will be presented in a jointly published paper, in a national and/or international conference. The work will be conducted in collaboration with researchers from the department of Journalism Media and Communication, the Centre for Ageing and Health and Prognosis AB.
QUALIFICATIONS
We are seeking a candidate who on a personal level is independent, with analytical skills and self-motivated. Good programming skills in e.g. Python (or other equivalent language), knowledge in HTML/CSS/D3.js/dc.js or other equivalent visualization tools and environments are also acceptable. The candidate must possess a Master degree in language technology or computer science with focus on processing of textual data.
ASSESSMENT
The assessment of your application will be based mainly on your provided, documented skills. Excellent skills regarding scientific communication in English, a high degree of independence and a developed way of critical thinking are also expected.
