Department of Soil and Environment
An appointment as Professor in Nutrient Cycling is vacant at the Department of Soil and Environment at SLU, Uppsala. The Department carries out teaching and research on chemical, physical and biological properties and processes in soil linked to sustainable use of soil as a natural resource.

Subject area
The subject concerns processes and factors affecting plant nutrient cycling and nutrient availability in soil in agricultural systems. The subject can include different aspects of mineralization, organic matter dynamics, transport processes and plant uptake using modelling and/or experimental approaches. Both agricultural productivity and environmental impact should be taken into consideration.

Duties
The holder of the position is expected to:

• develop and lead a strong research environment with internationally recognized and successful research
• apply for external research funding from national and international sources
• develop and maintain national and international networks and collaborations with academia, and relevant stakeholders as well as with society in general
• lead, develop and participate in teaching and supervision of students at undergraduate and master's levels
• actively participate in the supervision and training of PhD students
• contribute to the strategic development at department and faculty levels
• disseminate research findings and contribute with relevant knowledge to society.

Qualifications
The candidate who is offered the position shall:

• have a PhD degree and the qualifications required to be appointed docent (associate professor) or equivalent
• be scientifically skilled within the subject area for this appointment
• have good teaching skills
• have a proven ability to obtain external research funding
• have a proven ability to lead and develop a research group.

Assessment criteria
The assessment will primarily be based on the degree to which the applicant possesses the required qualifications specified for the position. Research experience that involves several aspects of the subject area, as described above is particularly relevant.

The assessment of scientific skills will consider:

• past and ongoing research
• future research vision
• ability to independently initiate and pursue innovative research
• ability to attract external funding.

The assessment of teaching skills will consider

• planning, conducting and evaluating teaching
• experience of supervision and examination of undergraduate students
• experience of supervision and examination at doctoral level
• pedagogic vision.

Furthermore, the assessment will consider the applicant's degree of skills in:

• developing and managing activities and staff at a higher education institution or research institute
• interacting with relevant stakeholders and society
• dissemination of information on research and development projects.

Assessment of pedagogic and scientific skills shall be given equal consideration.

Form of employment
The employment is limited to four years in accordance with the Higher Education Act. A position as associate senior lecturer is a qualifying employment that constitutes the first step in an academic career at SLU. An associate senior lecturer has the right during his or her employment to apply for promotion to senior lecturer on the basis of criteria established when the position as associate senior lecturer was announced.
