Our research focuses on major public health diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.
We have a strong partnership with Sahlgrenska University Hospital and the HTA Center of Västra Götaland Region, where we work with evidence-based care and health economics. The HTA Center evaluates medical methods and publishes reports that are distributed to various authorities and institutions. It also offers courses at the doctoral and postdoctoral levels in evidence-based medicine/HTA.
To further develop evidence-based medicine, the Department of Medicine and Sahlgrenska University Hospital have a shared need to integrate academic expertise in evidence-based medicine and HTA into their activities, including the HTA Center.
Subject area
Medical science with focus on evidence-based medicine
Subject area description
Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and evidence-based medicine are two closely related concepts in healthcare. Both aim to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare by basing decisions on scientific evidence.
HTA is a systematic process for evaluating methods, techniques, and treatments in healthcare. It includes a review of scientific literature to assess benefits and risks for patients, as well as ethical and health-economic aspects. HTA reports serve as a basis for decisions regarding the introduction or discontinuation of methods and products in healthcare.
Evidence-based medicine is built on making decisions using the best available scientific results, clinical experience, and patient preferences. HTA is an important part of evidence-based medicine, as it provides systematic evaluations that support evidence-based decisions. At the Institution of Medicine and Sahlgrenska University Hospital, there is a particular focus on HTA and evidence-based medicine.
Duties
The position holder is expected to systematically identify and analyze knowledge gaps in healthcare and initiate and lead projects to address them, which may include extensive and methodologically rigorous evaluations of medical methods, techniques, and treatments. The goal is to create evidence-based decision-making materials that enhance the quality and efficiency of healthcare. Additionally, the role includes actively seeking external research funding, establishing and developing a strong research environment at the HTA center, and supervising doctoral students and junior researchers within the HTA field. The position holder is also expected to contribute to the development of postgraduate education and collaborate with national and international stakeholders to promote knowledge exchange and implementation of research findings.
The teaching assignment includes teaching in the medical program to provide medical students with an understanding of and fundamental skills in the process of evidence-based medicine through lectures and practical exercises. For example, by participating as a teacher/supervisor in semester 10 for the 30-credit thesis course and teaching epidemiology in the internal medicine course (semester 6) in the medical program. Additionally, the role includes responsibility for HTA courses at the doctoral level within the Sahlgrenska Academy and for clinical researchers at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, as well as conducting educational initiatives for training physician (AT/BT/ST) and other healthcare professionals.
The position also involves participation in collegial bodies and decision-making processes to ensure academic quality and development, as well as collaboration with the Västra Götaland Region in the administration and development of HTA activities at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
The clinical work will be linked with the HTA activities at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
