The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities in this multidisciplinary department include, in addition to animal welfare; research across the disciplines of biology, ecology, and environmental science.

The faculty has offered education in animal husbandry, animal welfare and animal welfare legislation since 2007, at both bachelor and advanced levels. The research environment collaborates with other researchers at the faculty, and national as well as international collaborations provide valuable contributions to our various ongoing research projects.

Job description

The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, with placement at the Department of Biology and Environmental Science, is seeking an outstanding professor in the field of farm animal welfare. A donation from the Marie-Claire Cronstedt Foundation (https://mccstiftelse.se ) initiated and will partly fund the professorship to promote research on farm animal welfare. The position entails the running of an independent research program focused on the welfare and protection of farm animals, with the aim of improving animal health and welfare conditions throughout their lives, from birth to slaughter. Of special interest is research that can find solutions for improved farm animal welfare, including aspects of preventive farm animal health and increased possibilities for animals to perform important natural behaviors. In addition, the position includes the teaching, supervision, and examination of bachelor, advanced, and PhD-level students, as well as related administration. Important tasks also include contributing to the development of the existing research and teaching activities at the Department, and contributing to a strong seminar culture. Additionally, the professor should take an active part in public debate concerning farm animal welfare, giving a science-based aspect of subjects discussed. Associated with the position is the responsibility for organizing a national conference on farm animal health and welfare in the name of Marie-Claire Cronstedt every second year.

Requirements

To be qualified for appointment as professor is a person who has demonstrated sufficient, relevant scientific and pedagogical skills. (HF chapter 4, section 3).

Furthermore, the Linnaeus University's appointment criteria require that a person must have demonstrated scientific skills through independent, active research in accordance with current national standards, both qualitatively and quantitatively and at a level considerably exceeding that required for award of the title associate professor (docent) in Veterinary Science, Animal Science or Biology.

The capacity to lead a research program through the attraction of external funding in competition, and the delivery of research outcomes through publication in international peer-reviewed publications are central to the role. Furthermore, the informing of practice for the broader development of animal health sector including communication with governmental and industry stakeholders is a requirement. Demonstrated capacity to successfully supervise (as main supervisor) PhD students and post-doctoral researchers is a further requirement. Interest in- and experience of scientific communication with media and members of the public is desirable.

Pedagogical skills should be demonstrated through documented well delivered and managed teaching and examination at first-, second- and third-cycle levels. This includes planning and implementation of courses, supervision of project students, and evaluation of teaching.

In order to qualify for this appointment, the candidate must also have:

• an outstanding track record of international peer reviewed publications in the area,

• an established track record of receiving external funding as main applicant, in national and/or international competition, in particular over the past five years,

• a documented record of leading competitive farm animal welfare-oriented research,

• the ability to lead a competitive research program that complements and strengthens the ongoing research at the faculty
-a well-documented capacity to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in both teaching and research contexts,

• a high degree of proficiency in written and spoken English.

The successful candidate shall have a capacity to teach in the Swedish language, or shall have attained the necessary skills to do so by the start of the third year of employment. Support for language training shall be provided.

Other assessment criteria include, well documented:
-experience of teaching and teaching-related administration at the university level.

• the ability to collaborate well with others and general suitability for the relevant tasks.
