The arena
The Respiratory, Inflammation & Autoimmunity IMED develops novel drugs for the treatment of conditions such as asthma and COPD. The new modalities chemistry team supports the RIA drug discovery programs by leading our efforts in new modality based drug discovery, including design and synthesis of peptides and oligonucleotides. The team operates in a highly cross disciplinary environment in close collaboration with scientists from the Chemistry, Bioscience, DMPK and Pharmaceutical Science departments to advance the RIA new modality project pipeline.
Job description:
Develop and lead science in the field of peptide/nucleotide chemistry at the RIA Medicinal Chemistry Department. Provide the scientific expertise needed to demonstrate impact on multiple projects in all phases of new modality based drug discovery, across the RIA IMED. Influence the direction of the RIA new modalities strategic investments. Leading from the bench by contributing to the design and synthesis of peptides/nucleotides, applying state of the art knowledge. Coach and support scientists within RIA by advising and challenging them, but also by providing expert input and interpretation of complex data. Will be an RIA authority in peptide/nucleotide chemistry and make significant contributions to the delivery of project goals. Identify and drive collaborations and publication opportunities. Continuously publish and present results from own scientific work.
The jobholder has a scientific background with strong skills in written and verbal communication. In addition, an ability to engage and collaborate across boundaries with a problem solving attitude and delivery focus.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Work with the leadership team at the RIA Medicinal Chemistry Departments to build the strategic vision for the future development of new modalities and their application to RIA disease areas, identify investment needs and lead implementation.
Actively input cross RIA IMED departments to build the RIA new modalities platform. Directly impact on the RIA IMED projects to ensure maintaining high scientific standards and quality of compound design to meet project objectives
Maintain and develop key cross functional interaction e.g. Pharmaceutical Science, Discovery Safety
Together with AZ patent attorneys lead authorship of project patent application, lead discussion on filing strategy
Mentor colleagues by providing expert advice and support interpretation of complex data
Drive RIA IMED scientific reputation by identifying and progressing publication opportunities internally, across AZ and/or together with external partners.
Identify and engage with leading internal and external experts, prepare grant applications and lead collaborations
Promote the science of peptide/nucleotide chemistry across AZ by providing Science stories, Post Cards, and communication around publications.
Education:
PhD in chemistry or corresponding experience in a relevant scientific discipline with significant experience from drug discovery focused on peptide/nucleotide chemistry. Documented experience of scientific leadership within peptide/nucleotide chemistry applied to medicinal chemistry drug discovery.
Requirements and Qualifications:
In-depth scientific knowledge in the area of peptide/nucleotide chemistry including design, synthesis and data analysis proven by track record of project deliveries, publications and external presentations
Experienced from the use and project application of modern analytical, biophysical, structural chemistry and computational techniques used to progress peptide and nucleotide based projects
Familiar with recent developments in areas relevant to peptide/nucleotide based medicinal chemistry drug discovery e.g. pharmacokinetics, pharmacology, safety, formulation, and screening approaches
A proven track record of delivery from own experimental work
Excellent communication and influencing skills
In-depth knowledge of the pharmaceutical drug discovery and development process
A proven track record of delivering tasks in a timely manner
