Our 10,000 students and 500 employees create conditions for society's digital transformation and sustainable societal development through high-quality education and research in selected areas. Welcome to a vibrant campus in the heart of Skaraborg.
About us:
The position is offered within the area of electrical engineering at the University of Skövde. The subject deals with the study, construction and use of systems and units in electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. The subject includes but is not limited to power systems, energy engineering, power electronics, electrical machines and automation engineering.
The activities is within the School of Engineering Sciences characterized by a creative and dynamic environment, which includes a good collaborative climate, modern facilities and excellent collaboration with industry. The research within the department is furthermore characterized by investigation of physical phenomena in a virtual environment by use of digital tools and physical experiments.
You will be part of the research group Virtual Manufacturing Processes where the research is divided into four symbiotic subgroups; electrical engineering, data-driven analysis, virtual process modeling and experimental validation. Research projects within the research group is in close collaboration with industry partners and to a large extent based on the industry's needs.
Your role:
The position will primarily concern research (teaching or other administrative tasks up to 20% may be included). The research will primarily be conducted within the project "Innovative Microgrid Design for Sustainable Onshore Power Supply: Case Study in the Port of Stockholm" This project is financially granted by VINNOVA with the cooperation of industrial partners including Ports of Stockholm, ILMATAR, and Stella Futura.
By 2030, the Onshore Power Supply (OPS) infrastructure is expected to support 100% of ships at berth, substantially increasing the load on port electrical networks. This growing demand necessitates innovative solutions for managing both local and external power requirements. OPS is a vital electrification solution that enables vessels to connect to the port's electrical grid while berthed, allowing them to shut down their auxiliary engines. This provides a reliable power supply to the ship's electrical systems, reducing emissions and noise pollution in the port. This project proposes an innovative solution to optimize OPS demand for the Ports of Stockholm by integrating microgrid technology. Focusing on the port, it incorporates a PV power plant and BESS to handle increased energy demands and ensure reliable power delivery. While OPS systems are already used to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, this project addresses the challenge of rising energy demands. By optimizing microgrid design and sizing, it aims to improve efficiency, reduce emissions, and enhance the operational resilience of ports, offering a cost-effective, sustainable solution for cleaner energy systems in port environments.
The qualification requirements are:
• PhD in electrical engineering or energy engineering or other relevant subjects.
• Experience in research in power and energy system operation and planning.
• Experiences in research in modelling and optimization of renewable energy sources and energy storage systems.
• Experience with GMAS, Python and Machine Learning libraries.
• Ability to communicate well, orally and in written, in English.
• Good collaboration skills and ability to build relationships and networks.
In addition to the qualification requirements, the bases of evaluation for this position are:
• Completed a PhD degree no more than three years before the application deadline
• The degree of such skills that form a qualification requirement.
• Skills in real-time Energy Management Systems (EMS).
• Working experience with industrial partners.
• Ability to communicate well, orally and in written, in Swedish.
• Ability to present scientific results, both orally and in writing, and formulate research applications.
