in Scenario Analysis of Forest Futures

www.slu.seThe Mistra (www.mistra.org) program ‘Future Forests’ invites applicants for a full-time postdoctoral position, one year with the possibility to extend to two years.
The research program Future Forests is officially starting in January 2009 and will strive to comprise two phases (4 + 4 years). It will directly involve about 30 scientists from several Swedish universities and institutions, and involve a large number of stakeholders. The program has the ambition to significantly improve the base of knowledge of the provision of ecosystems services from the forest landscape, striving to sustainably achieve “more of everything� – timber, paper and bioenergy as well as biodiversity, recreation, water resources, and climate change mitigation.
The aim of the postdoc project is to contribute to the development and analysis of long-term scenarios concerning the future of Swedish forests, considering, in particular, expected changes in climate and forest use. The successful candidate is expected to work closely with colleagues in an interdisciplinary program, and to interact with stakeholders representing many different interests in forest use. The project will also include an initial study period (6 months) at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, under the supervision of Professor Peter Duinker, followed by designing and coordinating scenario work in Future Forests, and organizing expert and stakeholder workshops. The position will be placed in Umeå for the remaining time.
Qualifications: A typical qualifying background is a PhD in environmental sciences, forestry, social sciences or a closely related field, plus relevant work experience in planning or policy-making. Research experience in scenario analysis is highly desirable. The applicant should have an interdisciplinary outlook, strong communication and facilitation skills (oral and written English), ability and willingness to travel, and an aptitude for qualitative futures studies. A basic understanding of forests, forestry and the forest sector is a clear asset. SLU is an equal opportunity employer.
