The department includes 90 people of about 10 are professors. Our mission is to advance the understanding of forest ecosystem processes and to progress the principles of forest ecosystem management. For more information,
http://www.slu.se/en/departments/forest-ecology-management/Anthropogenic mercury (Hg) emissions to the atmosphere have increased the concentration of this potent neurotoxin in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The first annual Hg mass-balance for a boreal peatland that measured peat-atmosphere exchange revealed so much evasion of the Hg pollution legacy from the peat back to the atmosphere that the mire will have recovered in decades, rather than in centuries as previously assumed believed. Producing this mass balance was a methodological challenge, but explaining it presents a scientific challenge. The post-doc will work on how the direction of Hg exchange between peatlands and atmosphere is influence by atmospheric gaseous elemental mercury concentrations. The project will make use of historical peat archives of Hg concentration and isotopic composition.
Duties:
The main tasks of the selected candidate are (1) to analyze Hg concentration and isotope composition in peat profiles (2) to explain patterns using peat composition, together with reconstructions of climate and atmospheric Hg concentration during the growth of the peat profile over previous millenia.
Qualifications:
Applicants must have a doctorate in geochemistry, paleoecology, or a related subject. Documented experience and skills in working with peat profiles and mercury levels are required. Expertise and experience in climate reconstruction and or interpretation of Hg isotopes is a merit, as well as expertise and knowledge in biogeochemistry. You should speak and write fluent English, communicate well, and are easy to collaborate with. We attach great importance to personal qualities such as the ability to work both in groups and individually.
The position is intended for junior scientists and we are preferably looking for applicants that have received their PhD not later than three years ago.
