Would you like to contribute to the development of sustainable Zinc ion batteries for stationary energy storage applications?
Are you motivated by bridging fundamental research with industry-oriented projects in collaboration with leading industrial partners? Then this postdoc may be the position for you.

In this Postdoc position, you will be offfered the chance to deepen your expertise in battery cell fabrication and advance towards practical battery pack applications. You will be part of a collaborative environment, working closely with both academic and industrial researchers along the entire battery value chain, making a tangible impact on the future of energy storage.

About us
This Postdoc position will be placed at the Department of Industrial and Material science (IMS) at Chalmers University of Technology. IMS empowers people with knowledge and technical solutions for future industry, in a sustainable society. Through excellent research, innovation, and education, we create future industrial value chains.

At the Division of Materials and Manufacture, our 40 dedicated colleagues care for one another and create an inspiring workplace where collaboration thrives. Together, we drive research and education in materials and manufacturing with a strong commitment to sustainability - not only for materials, but for people as well. Our work spans the entire production chain, from innovative material design and advanced processes to the characterization of materials and components.

About the research project
The project is an EU-level collaboration with six partners in Austria, Germany, and Sweden, aiming to develop advanced zinc-based batteries for stationary energy storage. The project focuses on creating efficient and reliable energy storage solutions that support renewable energy integration in flexible charging systems.

Energy storage is essential for the widespread use of renewable energy, given its intermittent and variable nature. While lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been highly successful in powering electric vehicles, they face major challenges in large-scale grid applications. Their high cost, reliance on critical elements, and energy-intensive production processes make them less sustainable for stationary use.

In this role, you will contribute to the synthesis of high-performance cathode materials, binders for zinc-ion batteries, and sustainable electrode manufacturing technologies. You will prepare aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion battery cells, which will then be delivered to international collaborators to assemble into battery packs for practical applications.

Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:

• To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Chemical Engineering or related disciplines awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline*.
• You will need strong written and verbal communication skills in English
• Good ability to communicate your results in writing and presentations
• Strong collaborative skills

We value candidates who can maintain motivation and efficiency in the face of challenges, and who are committed to reaching high-quality results.

• The date on your doctoral degree certificate is considered the official date of completion. Exceptions to the three-year eligibility limit may be made for documented circumstances such as parental leave, sick leave, or military service.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

• Strong competence in energy materials development and battery cell (coin cell, pouch cell, cylindrical cell) fabrication skills is highly meritorious

What you will do

• Your major responsibility as a postdoc is to perform your own research in the project and research group by collaborating with others.
• You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing in English.
• The position may also includes supervising Master and/or PhD student to a certain extent.
