Become part of our innovative group and contribute to exciting research within a collaborative and dynamic environment.
About the research project
Future communication and defense systems demand power amplifiers combining high efficiency, linearity, and frequency agility. Meeting these requirements calls for a deeper understanding of how semiconductor device properties influence amplifier performance. By combining advanced device measurements, empirical modeling, and power amplifier design, this project will generate new insights into the material, process, and design factors that set the performance limits of state-of-the-art Gallium Nitride (GaN) technologies.
In this project, Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher position in GaN device characterization and modeling for RF/microwave power amplifiers, as part of a large collaborative project with leading industrial partners such as Ericsson, SweGaN, Saab, and United Monolithic Semiconductors (UMS), aiming to advance the next generation of transistor and amplifier technologies for 6G wireless communication and defense systems.
This position offers the opportunity to conduct research in high-frequency Gallium-Nitride device characterization and modeling, directly linked to next-generation power amplifier design. You will work in the state-of-the-art labs, collaborating closely with leading industrial partners, gaining access to unique devices and design platforms. The role provides excellent conditions to strengthen your research profile, contribute to high-impact publications, and play a central role in advancing technologies for future 6G and defense applications.
Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:
• To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree in microwave electronics, semiconductor device physics, or RF circuit design awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline*.
• A strong background in one or more of: device modeling, transistor characterization, RF measurement techniques, or power amplifier design
• Excellent communication skills in English
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative academic-industrial environment
You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.
• The date on your doctoral degree certificate is considered the official date of completion. Exceptions to the three-year eligibility limit may be made for documented circumstances such as parental leave, sick leave, or military service.
The following experience will strengthen your application:
• Hands-on experience with on-wafer measurements such as S-parameters, pulsed I/V, or load-pull
• Experience with RF power amplifier circuit design
What you will do
• Perform advanced on-wafer characterization of high-frequency transistor devices, including bias-dependent S-parameters, pulsed I/V, and load-pull measurements
• Develop empirical device models that capture static, dynamic and high-frequency device behavior
• Use these models to predict amplifier performance and provide feedback for circuit design and Process Design Kit (PDK) development
• Collaborate with industrial partners to benchmark results, validate models against fabricated amplifier designs, and - very importantly - guide technology development
• Publish results in leading journals and conferences, and supervise PhD students within the project
• Conduct independent research in collaboration with the research group
• Publish and present your work at conferences and in journals
• Supervise master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent
• Possibility to engage in teaching at undergraduate/master's level
• Collaborate within academia and with society at large
The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.
Contract terms
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension.
Physical presence is required throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, or the offer may be withdrawn.
What we offer
• As a postdoc at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy employee benefits. Read more about working at Chalmers and benefits for employees.
