AstraZeneca is a global, innovation-driven biopharmaceutical business that focuses on the discovery, development and commercialisation of prescription medicines for some of the world's most serious diseases. We're proud to have a unique workplace culture that inspires innovation and collaboration. We believe in the potential of our people and you'll develop beyond what you thought possible.

The new R&D BioPharmaceuticals organisation brings together research and development teams, from discovery through to late-stage development for Cardiovascular, Renal & Metabolic (CVRM), Respiratory, Inflammatory and Autoimmune (RIA) therapy areas, and opportunistically for Microbial Sciences and Neuroscience.

You'll be in a global pharmaceutical environment but also exposed to strong rigorous academic science. For example, every postdoc has an external academic mentor to ensure we are working and publishing at the highest level in a field. What's more, you'll have the support of a leading academic advisor, who'll provide you with the guidance and knowledge you need to develop your career.

As a world leader in cardiovascular, renal and metabolic medicines, we're always working on innovative new drugs that will change lives across the globe. To make that happen, we employ a small molecule and new modalities research and development strategy with three priorities: heart failure, diabetes and chronic kidney disease. You'll focus your efforts on making real progress toward slowing, stopping or curing some of the most aggressive diseases that face humanity today.

AstraZeneca, in association with the University of Gothenburg Chemical Imaging Infrastructure (CII), has now begun to integrate NanoSIMS imaging into the suite of technologies available to study drug disposition/kinetics of cells and tissues. NanoSIMS imaging provides the spatial resolution and sensitivity required to answer the question of chemical localization within single cells. The goal of this project will be to develop the technology that will be used understand the trafficking of biopharmaceuticals at the sub cellular level. This position will mainly take place at the CII located at the AstraZeneca BioVentureHub (Astrazeneca, Gothenburg), which is under the direction of Andrew Ewing. You'll have the unique experience of working simultaneously in both an academic and industrial drug discovery environment.

The New Modalities/DMPK department in Early CVRM is seeking a skilled and creative postdoctoral candidate with experience in cellular biology. You'll use a combination of Transmission Electron Microscopy and NanoSIMS imaging to visualize the fate of biopharmaceuticals at the sub-cellular level. Furthermore, you'll use molecular biological tools to disrupt trafficking patters to identify key time points along the path toward target engagement. The position requires the ability to bridge the physical aspects of ion/matter interactions and the biological process under investigation.

Education and Experience required:

Essential:

• A PhD in chemistry, physics or biology

• Expertise in mass spectrometry

• Independent progress in a research project

• A proven record of work published in reputable scientific journals

• Familiarity with handling cells and tissue

Desirable:

• Practical experience in MS imaging (TOF-SIMS, nanoSIMS)

• Practical experience in Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)

• TEM sample Preparation

Skills and Capabilities required:

• Fluent English in writing and speaking and strong communication skills are required

This is a 3-year programme. 2 years will be a Fixed Term Contract, with a 1-year extension which will be merit based. The role will be based in Gothenburg, with a competitive salary on offer. To apply for this position, please click the apply link below.
