The Sahlgrenska Academy, Gothenburg

PhD student position in medical science - radiobiology

Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, 4 years Extent: 100 % Location: Sahlgrenska Academy, Gothenburg First day of employment: As agreed Reference number: UR 2015/910 Project title: Understanding late effects after radiation to the pelvic area Job assignments: To promote a better quality of life on a long-term basis among those who survive their cancer diagnosis, it is crucial to expand our knowledge about how radiation-induced late effects arise, and what factors influence their development and progression. Led by Professor Gunnar Steineck (MD, PhD), The Division of Clinical Cancer Epidemiology has mapped and categorized clinical late effects after radiation towards the pelvic area for over twenty years. The PhD student will join a new, smaller preclinical subdivision of the group, created to pursue the underlying biological causes of the development and progression of the mapped symptoms. The candidate will develop a new mouse model of fractionated radiation to the pelvic area to study primarily late radiation-induced changes in stem cell survival and production of new cells in the intestinal tract. The model will also be used to study how the gut microflora influences the long-term outcome of rad iation-induced injury. The successful candidate will acquire knowledge and conduct experiments in several areas of research, including radiobiology, stem cell biology, microbiology and immunology. Methods include, but are not limited to, immunohistochemistry, stereology, next generation sequencing, ELISA, MRI and radiation techniques. The position is full-time. Animal work is included, and work on-site on weekends and evenings periodically. We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a keen interest in research regarding disease mechanisms and life quality improvement. The candidate needs to aquire knowledge and perform experiments in a cross-disciplinary environment, where collaboration is key. The Division of Clinical Cancer Epidemiology is a truly translational environment with various studies on clinical effects in combination with preclinical research originating from a person-based perspective. As a physician or medical student, you will get a good understanding of both the biology and the foundation of modern epidemiological evidence-based medicine. As a biologist or with similar background, you will get insights into how biological research on normal tissue can be applied to help current and future cancer survivors to restored health. Proficiency in spoken and written English is necessary. We would like the applicants to motivate why they interested in the project and why they are suitable applicants. The PhD position comprises 4 years full-time studies and leads to a doctoral degree. The position is funded via doctoral studentship.

To be admitted to third-cycle studies you must fulfill both the general and the specific entry requirements. The general entry requirements is fulfilled if you have: 1. completed a degree at a second-cycle level, or 2. completed at least 240 credits worth of studies of which at least 60 credits must be at a second-cycle level, or 3. acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. The specific entry requirements is fulfilled if you have completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies.
