Arbetsplats: The Sahlgrenska Academy
Ort: Gothenburg
Titel: PhD student position in medical science - Role of gut microbiota in type 2 diabetes
Beskrivning av arbetsuppgifter:
Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, 4 years if full-time studies Extent: 100 % Location: Sahlgrenska Academy, Gothenburg First day of employment: As agreed Reference number: UR 2015/691 The prevalence of obesity is on the rise, with adverse consequences for health including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Although genetic factors play an important role in obesity risk, environmental factors are viewed as being responsible for the increased prevalence of obesity over the past decades. The trillions of bacteria in the gut, known as gut microbiota, encode 150-fold more genes than our human genome. The gut microbiome (collection of all microbial genes) is acquired at birth and, although it is a distinct entity, it has clearly coevolved with the human genome. The gut microbiota can thus be considered a multicellular organ with immense capacity to affect host metabolism at the intersection between environment and genetics. Accordingly, we and others have demonstrated that the gut microbiota can regulate energy balance and contribute to obesity and insulin resistance. Here we will use next generation sequencing to develop methods and investigate if the gut microbiota is altered in patients with Prader-Willi Syndrome, who develop obesity and type 2 diabetes, as well as if bariatric surgery has different effects in obese individuals with or without type 2 diabetes. We would like the applicants to motivate why they are interested in the project and why they are suitable applicants. The PhD position comprises 4 years full-time studies and leads to a doctoral degree. The position is funded via doctoral studentship.
