Titel:
PhD student position in medical science - Etiology of eating disorders in a neuroperspective

Beskrivning av arbetsuppgifter:
Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, 4 years Extent: 100 % Location: Sahlgrenska Academy, Gothenburg First day of employment: As agreed Reference number: UR 2015/1151 Job assignments: The Eating Disorders (EDs) Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Bulimia Nervosa (BN) are severe psychiatric disorders that affect approximately 2% of the population and may have a chronic course. The genetic and environmental factors contributing to the development of EDs have to be disentangled. ESSENCE (Early Symptomatic Syndromes Eliciting Neurodevelopmental Clinical Examinations) such as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) seem to be closely related to EDs, as they are overrepresented in individuals with EDs, and vice versa. EDs and ESSENCE have common traits and show striking similarities in their neuropsychological profiles. Previous studies indicate that AN has particularly much in common with ASD, while BN might be closer associated with ADHD. Based on two prospective populations, a twin population and a sample of adults with adolescent-onset AN, this PhD project aims to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the etiology of EDs. A focus will be on describing developmental paths to AN and BN and how these may be moderated by ESSENCE. It will furthermore be investigated if there is a common genetic overlap between EDs and ESSENCE, and if there is an etiological demarcation between EDs and disordered eating. Finally, the neuropsychological profile of individuals with EDs will be examined applying an eye tracking approach. The overlap of genetic and environmental factors contributing to EDs and ESSENCE could provide clues for molecular genetic research and be of aid in the development of adequate treatment strategies, e.g. pharmacological treatment. The early recognition of symptoms of predisposing factors for EDs, such as ESSENCE, could be target of specific intervention and therefore be important in the prevention of EDs. The PhD position comprises 4 years full-time studies and leads to a doctoral degree. The position is funded via doctoral studentship.
