PhD student in Secure Software Engineering

The department of Computer Science and Engineering is strongly international, with
approximately 80 faculty and 70 PhD students from 30 countries. The department is a fully
integrated department with the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of
Technology as principals. The position is placed in the Software Engineering (SE) Division at
the department, with University of Gothenburg as the employer. Within the SE division,
research ranges from software architecture, requirements, process improvement and change
management, human factors, model-driven software development, agile processes, to
verification and validation. The department includes additional strong groups with related

Software Engineering is a strategic area at the department and activities in the field are
envisaged to grow further. To this end, the Software Engineering division was founded in
2010 by University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology in a joint venture.
The Software Engineering Division works in close collaboration with industrial partners,
which presents excellent opportunities to conduct research with industry. The division actively
collaborates with industrial partners from the automotive and telecommunications domain.
Job assignments
The announced PhD position is positioned in the research area of secure software engineering.
The position is sponsored by a joint research project between the university and companies in
the automotive domain, including Volvo. The project aims at providing a logistic approach to
improve security and privacy of software running on connected vehicles. In particular, the
PhD candidate is expected to contribute with innovative techniques in the field of security by
design. The position gives the opportunity to develop theoretical results that can be directly
validated in an industrial context. The main PhD supervisor will be Riccardo Scandariato
( www.scandariato.eu ).
The position is a full-time appointment and mainly focuses on research but duties may also
include the supervision of bachelor and master theses or assisting in teaching.
Eligibility
The qualifications for education on a doctoral level are: degree in advanced level, at least 240
university points, of which 60 are on an advanced level, or in an other way acquired similar
knowledge. Applicants for the position should have a strong master's degree in computer
science. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in:
• Security and secure software

• Software engineering focusing on embedded systems
• Modeling (e.g., UML, state charts, etc.)
In addition, the ideal applicant has the following individual and social skills:
• Fluent English language skills
• Strong communication skills
• Strong self-organizing skills
