Position description
The School of Business, Society and Engineering is looking for a PhD student in energy and environmental engineering. The position involves working within the research specialization Future Energy Center (FEC).

The work is part of the research activities conducted under a number of turbine performance related projects at FEC. Modelling, simulation and optimization of complex turbine systems will be a key focus of this work, including carrying out detailed assessments. A large part of the work will be done at - or in close contact with - several partner organizations. The successful candidate is therefore expected to have skills in turbine performance and fluid mechanics-based optimization and be able to interact effectively with partner research institutes, industry, colleagues and other stakeholders.
The PhD student is expected to take initiatives, develop own ideas and work independently when needed, as well as take responsibility for the work. Furthermore, the project interacts closely with other parallel PhD projects and industrial partners. Thus the applicant needs to have high collaborative skills. The PhD student needs to be able to disseminate and communicate scientific results and knowledge orally as well as in written form within existing and new networks. This includes academia, industry and society at large. The research results will be presented at project meetings, conferences and in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Employment is limited and equivalent to full-time studies at the graduate level for 4 years.

Qualifications
Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education may be appointed to doctoral studentships. For futher information see Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100). Employment as a doctoral student requires admittance to a graduate (research) program within a Swedish university. Reference is made to the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 (SFS 1993: 100). To be accepted to the graduate (research) program in Energy and Environmental Engineering the student should have one of the following:

• Completed a Master's degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits (Swedish: civilingenjör) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Energy Engineering, or engineering physics.
• Completed a four-year science education with technical content equivalent to a Master's degree within the above subjects.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organization.

Assessment Criteria
The school will select the most suitable candidate for this position following a combined evaluation of competence and skills, in addition to documented qualifications. Decisive importance is attached to personal suitability. Personal suitability will be judged in relation to the candidate's capacity to effectively carry out the project research work, to integrate and contribute to a positive development of the research environment at MDH, as well as deliver value to the project's partner organizations. MDH continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at MDH. We value the qualities that an even distribution of age and gender, as well as ethnic and cultural diversity, can contribute to the organization.

Merit
You are open-minded and interested in collaborating across borders within and outside MDH. Interest in and experience research as well as a stay at an institution other than the one where your MSc was awarded are considered merits. Teamwork, leadership, organizational and entrepreneurial skills are advantages. Further qualifications and merits for the position are:

• Knowledge in turbine performance and fluid mechanics, including CFD modelling and reduced-order model (ROM) based analysis and optimization.
• Experience in industrial R&D or in a junior academic research position within fluid mechanics and systems engineering.
• Knowledge of, experience with and interest in modeling, simulation and optimization of turbine systems with commercial and bespoke tools.
• Good programming skills and/or knowledge of e.g. Matlab, C++, Fortran, Python etc. is an advantage.
• Experience and interest in interaction with various international partner organizations and professional management and cooperation, including representing MDH at national and international events.
• Ability to collaborate with other researchers as well as work independently.
• Curious, goal-oriented, flexible, ambitious, and communicative personality.
