Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of nearly SEK 2,1 billion per year. We currently have 1,900 employees and 18,700 students.

In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future. At the EISLAB division you find Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) who focuses on integrated software and application architectures with implementations of massively distributed embedded systems that interact with each other and their environment to enable secure, goal-driven, autonomous and evolvable solutions.
This includes software-defined SoS for the automation and digitalization in production industries. Our research is conducted in close collaboration with industries such as Bosch, Ericsson, Volvo, Infineon, Boliden, LKAB, SKF, and leading international universities. A major result is the Eclipse Arrowhead, an open-source software framework for industrial automation widely supported by European industry.
Another emerging area is the cross-border collaboration in developing fully additive manufacturing processes for electronics packaging in Chiplet technology.

Subject description
Cyber-Physical Systems encompass integrated software, electronics hardware, and application architecture within connected devices and distributed systems. The research aims to create secure, autonomous and developable solutions that interact with each other and their surroundings, from the edge to the cloud.

Project Description
You will join a research team on a European project with responsibilities including:
• Advancing additive manufacturing for micro/nano metal interconnect patterning in multilayer electronic devices
• Identifying/optimizing novel polymers and photosensitive materials for additive manufacturing
• Developing femtosecond/picosecond laser-based micro-drilling and selective metallization for high-aspect-ratio vertical interconnects, preventing copper diffusion and adhesion issues
• Using correlative, multimodal characterization (SEM, AFM, XCT, optical microscopy) to evaluate structural integrity, geometric accuracy, and interface strength
• Validating scalability and sustainability by minimizing material waste, boosting energy efficiency, removing high-temperature sintering, and ensuring HDI packaging compatibility

The project supports Europe's digitalization through chiplet technology development. EISLAB leads the electronics packaging, targeting applications in IoT, SoS automation, AI/ML, and more. Outputs include academic publications and open-source contributions to Eclipse Arrowhead.
Projects involve close collaboration with both academic and industrial partners across Europe. While the work is largely independent, you will work closely with LTU researchers and global tech partners for guidance and impact.

Duties
As a PhD student, you work towards a Doctoral degree as the final goal. Most of your time will be devoted to working on research projects in which you will develop proofs-of-concept to experimentally evaluate and explore aspects of industrial software systems and components. You will communicate your results at international conferences and in scientific journals.
To support your dissertation work, you will take courses in the form of third-cycle studies introduction, generic courses for LTU PhD program, specially designed courses, etc. Your research and coursework will be planned and recorded in your individual study plan throughout your progress. In addition, teaching and other duties at the division or department exist for PhD students, which are limited to a maximum of one year of the total five-year period.

Qualifications
We are looking for a talented, analytical, and motivated colleague who can carry out advanced research both independently and in collaboration with our research group. Your background includes:
• A Master's degree (or equivalent) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Microelectronics or a related field
• Hands-on experience or strong knowledge of micro/nano-fabrication techniques (e.g., laser direct writing, electroless plating, photolithography, additive manufacturing)
• Familiarity with advanced analytical and characterization tools (e.g. XCT, SEM, AFM)
• Proficiency with CAD and simulation and modelling tools (e.g., CLEWIN, ANSYS, COMSOL)
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and within interdisciplinary teams
• Fluency in both spoken and written English is required
