1 PhD student in the research education subject: Biology
Improving biomass production in trees – A Systems biology approach
This project will be a part of the FORMAS funded research programme "Bioimprove-Improved biomass and bioprocessing properties of wood" (
http://www.bioimprove.se/) as one of the seven new Strong Research Environments. In total seven PhD students will be hired within the Bio-improve program. In this project hybrid aspen trees will be analysed for their metabolome and proteome utilizing recently established UPSC platforms (
http://www.upsc.se/metabolomics-facility ,
www.chem.umu.se/upa). The data will accordingly be mainly based on mass spectrometric analysis. The project involves integration of metabolomic and proteomic data using multivariate methods and network analysis which will provide a systems biology platform for experimental tree biology. This will have a profound effect on e.g. experimental planning and the ability to seek underlying molecular explanations for phenotypic data.
Qualifications
You need a degree in molecular biotechnology or equivalent preferably with specialization in plants. You should be interested to work in a cross-border project were both practical (mass spectrometry) and computer processing skills will be needed. Experience in biochemistry is an advantage. Good social skills, ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with others are valued. Good English is a requirement.

Employment as PhD student 4 years
A person has basic eligibility for third level education if he or she has taken a second level qualification or has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second level.
Those who met the requirements for general eligibility before July 1st, 2007, i.e. had completed a programme of higher education for at least 180 Higher education credits or the equivalent, will continue to do so until the end of 2015."
Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
