PhD student in the research education subject: Aquatic ecology
The use of benthic diatom assemblages as indicators of anthropogenic stress
The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment (www.ma.slu.se) is a centre for applied freshwater research with a special focus on environmental monitoring and assessment. At present, the department consists of some 80 employees, including 25 senior and postdoc scientists and some 14 PhD students. Research at the department focuses on geochemistry, biodiversity, and the fate and effects of environmental pollutants. We now would like to enlarge our research group by announcing a 2-year Fil Lic position in aquatic ecology, with focus on the use of benthic diatom assemblages as indicators of anthropogenic stress. In particular, the student will compare among-system (stream and lake) and between-habitat (benthic vs pelagic) response signatures and the uncertainties associated with the use of benthic diatoms to detect human-induced impact.
Qualifications: We seek for a dedicated candidate with a degree in aquatic ecology or other relevant subjects. Certified knowledge of Nordic benthic diatom taxonomy is required. The study will consist of the taxonomic identification of benthic diatoms from a number of lakes and streams and environmental analysis of the results. The starting date is negotiable, but preferably 1 August 2008. Fil Lic study programmes include a minimum of two years of full-time studies after your undergraduate degree.
Form for funding or employment: The 2-year position that will lead to a Licentiate exam will be funded by departmental research grants.

Those who met the requirements for general eligibility before July 1st, 2007, i.e. had completed a programme of higher education for at least 120 credits or the equivalent, will continue to do so until the end of 2015."
Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
